barbs47 0 Posted January 5, 2011 Hi. I am really needing some help and direction. I am 47, 5'0 and about 180 lbs. I am insulin dependent type II diabetic. I am addicted to carbs, sweets, etc. and seem to have no self control. I will start a diet and do well for a while, then something comes up and I am back to the same old destructive ways. I do exercise, I have been working with a personal trainer for about 3 months, but I just can't get a handle on my eating. Last spring I had an initial appt with a local bariatric surgeon and started doing all of the things to be banded. But I started to think that I should be able to do it on my own, so I dropped the ball. Well, now here I am several months later and several pounds later! I was wondering if the lab band will be a good fit for me since I can't seem to control what I eat? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

My grandmother, who has recently had the surgery, told me tonight that she is going to pay for my surgery! I am so excited because like you, I have struggled with the old fashioned way. If it were easy, we would have lost this weight by now. However, the few friends and family that I told about this, tell me that I don't need it...but that's typical...it sounds like you and I are both borderline...I say GO FOR IT! I've been banded for a while, and would also consider myself addicted to carbs and sweets. Banding has helped with carbs, because with proper restriction, breads are difficult to eat now , especially soft breads can cause problems, and so I avoid bread now, for the most part. However, sweets, like candy, Cookies, icecream, still go down very easily after being banded. Banding doesn't help at all with your addiction to sweets. You just have to try and not eat those things in order to succeed. I hear if you get gastric bypass though, you can't eat sweets, it causes dumping syndrome. The other good thing about the band is it does force you to eat slowly, and you do get fuller with less food, and feel less hunger. Good luck to you!
acs0618 0 Posted January 5, 2011 Hi There! My best advice to you would be to do some research and attend a WLS seminar in your area. That way you can learn about all types of weight loss surgeries and decide which is right for you. You can also speak with the surgeon running the seminar and get some ideas and support from him/her. Good luck! Amanda Follow my lapband journey: http://thebandontherun.blogspot.com/
