Surgery = Pain

Recommended Posts

I am not being smart here. :D I have seen this posted from so many 1 day post op to 7 days post op. You can not have surgery without pain it is impossible. Your sites are going to hurt your port site is going to hurt like heck. Does anyone really understand what they do to you when your in surgery? Your not fillet open gently by any means. I work in surgery I see what they do. Your filled with gas that isnt all the way taken out. It hurts like anything. You just can not have surgery without pain it is impossible. Take gas x, take your pain meds, get some lozenges cause the tube they put down your throat may give you a sore throat. It will get better your port site may hurt for 3 months it is sewn in the muscle. If your sites become red or hot big flag for infection if you are running temp another big flag for infection. They might even tweak your nose just to make sure you are asleep. Surgery hurts they cut through skin, muscles, nerves, they all have to heal. Hang in there it will get better. Wait til you lose weight and bend over one day and your port pinches you that feels wonderful. Heal well and relax you are feeling normal

I work in the veterinary field as a liscenced veterinary technician, I see animals go in surgery all the time, at my job they keep animals on Fentanyl CRI's post op. This was my first surgery, I was actually surprised on how short the pain lasted. Yes I was in pain when I woke up and the rest of the day (the hydrocodone APAP (which I looked up seems to be vicodin with acetominophen) worked wonders. The second day I was still uncomfortable but it wasn't bad and by the third day I had stopped taking the pain meds. I had taken a week off from work to recuperate, because I have a physical job, but I was getting antsy at home at like day 5. I don't know why, but I never realized being intubated is so painful/uncomfortable. My throat was really hurting me when I woke up. But it has taught me something, always go a little smaller when intubating a dog/cat. I never thought about what trying to place a larger tube does to their throats.

I am with you though, fluffytofabulous, seeing threads made about being painful after surgery, did you not think having your skin, muscle, and facia cut open was not going to hurt.

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

      I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
