How long does the plateau last?

Recommended Posts

I am 15 days post op now. I lost like 9.8 lbs or my 1 week pre op diet, and 9.4 lbs the week after surgery. Since then I have got up .6 lbs. I have heard people can plateau after surgey. My question is, Is this going to last 'til my first fill? Or maybe only another week? I am only getting in like 600-700 calories a day, I just moved onto mushies yesterday. I did not know that people can plateua after surgery, before I had surgery, so I guess I was under the impression, that post op I would lose a lot quickly and then it would slow, and I guess thinking about it, I did since I lost 19 lbs in 2 weeks (includes pre op). I guess I am just getting frusterated that the scale has not moved except in a little upward fashion. I have started going back to the gym, no weights until next week though, so just the elliptical.

Also, Sunday, I burned like 450 calories on the elliptical (I have a polar HR monitor watch with chest strap that tells you exactly how much you burn), but only had like 550 calories that day, is that ok to use that much of your intake, so that in essence I only had 100 calories that day?

Hi, yes plateau's early are normal. I lost a lot the first couple weeks and then things slowed down a lot; and yes I started back to the gym on day 4. I think in the short term because you are on such a restricted diet the 100 cal. is okay. When I said the same thing to my nurse she said "Your body has a lot of fat to burn! Long term you will be at a higher calorie count my Nutrionist says to be around 1,000 cal a day. Again long term you will want to ensure you're getting 60-90 g Protein a day. My Nutrionist okayed my having Premier Ready to Drink Protein (160 cal, 30 g protein) shake prework out because lunch and dinner are far apart. Were you going to the gym presurgery? From what I've read on this site; I think people who suddenly start exercising after surgery loose more for the first month or so than those who were already exercising.

Yeah, I was going to the gym presurgery. I was doing 30-40 min cardio 3-5 times per week and like 30 min on the weight machines a few times per week. Though I did not go the week prior to surgery

I platued six months after surgery and guess what six months later I am the same weight got filled lost 7lbs gained one back. Everyone is different. You cant expect weight loss to be fast when you didnt gain it fast. It may take up to two years to lose all your weight or longer especially if you have a lot to lose. Its just that simple. Yep it sucks sometimes.

Think about it..you're 15 days post op and you just put your body through a pretty invasive surgery. You can't expect your body to keep on shedding the pounds. Let yourself heal and by most surgeon's ideas healing takes 6 weeks if not more. Don't stress over the scale right now. I did the same thing and looking back I realized how frustrating it was, but I was doing it to myself!

Stay off the scale for awhile. Stick to your post-op rules and the scale will go down in time. There's no saying how long your "plateau" will last (not that it can even be called that really.) Allow yourself time to heal. Drink your Water and get as much Protein in as you can, it helps you heal faster.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
