FLORIDAYS 3,040 Posted January 13, 2011 I seem to be more concernwd about the diet soda than the liquid diet & all of the other adjustments that I will be making I was exactly the same way.... and although I am less than 2 months out from when I began this new way of life... I still miss diet coke but usually its just when I see someone else drinking it! I dont miss it as much as I worried about missing it.... if that makes sense. BetsyB 9 Posted January 13, 2011 I was a lifelong diet soda addict, and couldn't really imagine life without it. Banding cured me of that addiction. My doctor is a no-carbonation dude, and I really stuck to his rules/recommendations; he's a smart guy, and what I was doing before certainly wasn't working, so I did it his way. And it worked. I have had a sip of diet soda now and then---sometimes, I need a drink FAST, and one of my kids has one, and I take a sip. It's never caused me to explode or anything dire, but it's not comfortable, and it's no longer appealing. And I save a TON of money now that I'm not buying the stuff. hotsexyrunnerchick 5 Posted January 13, 2011 My surgeon says I can drink diet pop .. Dr. Ren-Fielding is one of the best in the biz so I am riding with her.
Jeremy8875 0 Posted January 13, 2011 My Dr. said he didn't see a problem with it as long as it was diet. I drink a 44oz'er just about every morning, and unless I gulp it, I have no problem.
trystelle 3 Posted January 14, 2011 Two things I had to quit before my surgery were diet coke and candy. Proud to say I have had neither for 2.5 years. I do enjoy drinking flat soda once in a while. I leave the bottle loosely capped on the counter for a few days. Ice helps to minimize the carbonation also. My doctor never said no soda, but carbonation is uncomfortable for me. So I still have a diet rootbeer or gingerale, but always flat. I really don't miss the diet coke at all!
mom24teens 0 Posted January 14, 2011 I'm on the "My doc says no" band wagon - or rather - my dietician says no. For all the reasons everyone has already mentioned. Not worth the risk, had to fight to get approved for surgery and not gonna do anything to risk it. By all means, I like to bend the rules as much as the next person, but if/when I do, it will be for something more worthwhile...
lauragshsu 6 Posted January 15, 2011 I don't drink diet soda, just regular soda. Granted, a 20oz bottle can last me 5-10 days. I've never been told not to drink soda, ever. I've never been told to limit it to diet.
ajaworski 0 Posted January 15, 2011 i'm on the opposite side of the spectrum... my doctor said no carbonation or alcohol for 3 months then after that time period it was fine. i drink 1 or 2 cans a day plus my Water. i've had absolutely no problems except for a gurgling noise when the soda passes thru the band that sounds like my stomach is growling. i'm almost 3 years post op. I'm 7 months out and do just fine on soda, beer, wine, even champagne. Not much of the other stuff, but when I do, no problems. I'm not worried about stretching the pouch, only over eating will do that. To each his own.

sld21 26 Posted January 15, 2011 it has been 372 days since I have had my last carbonated soda of any kind. My first doctor advised no but the second doctor said one or two a week is fine if I let it flatten a little. But by the time I started seeing him it had been months and now its a game to me, will I cave in to the lack of willpower or will I win over my own will. I have lost 88 lbs this year, so far so good. I have had a bottle of beer a few times this year but I usually can tolerate about a half bottle though I had two yesterday(light ones that I let sit out and settle down) I was fine. But I drink them rarely, very rarely and they probably flatten a bit in the fridge for the months they stay in there.
ansoninc 16 Posted January 15, 2011 I am always reading articles about how bad the artificial sweeteners are in diet sodas and that drinking too much of them can cause you to gain weight. I wasn't a huge drinker of diet coke;1-2 cans a day during the summer. They sure tasted good going down. I was banded 11/29 and recently dried a couple sips and it did not go well. I guess I could always try drinking Water
bandcamp1210 1 Posted January 15, 2011 I had my band done 12/29 and my Dr. is also in the "everything in moderation" camp. He said if you pour a diet coke into a baggie and seal it shut it won't explode or stretch the baggie, and your stomach is a lot thicker than a baggie. Did they say continue drinking two 32oz a day like pre-surgery? No. I went down to a 16oz to sip on in the afternoon after lunch. By the end of the day I am basically drinking Water. I have had NO problems with it. I do sip though, not gulp.
wannabfoxyGMA 0 Posted January 16, 2011 Thank you all for your response, I guess it is for sure each to his own discretion, but i'm pretty sure the Dr. I see this week is against drinking it... But I know I will have to give it a try at least...gotta have at least one vise... LOL !!!
