Banded 12/28, finally feeling better

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my first post on this site although I have looked around a bit in the previous months. I was banded 12/28 and expected to heal just fine after surgery. I am young and have no health history what-so-ever. I remember waking on the operating table with killer left shoulder pain and a burning lower belly. The burning in my belly was what we assume to be an allergic reaction to the cleaning agents used prior to the operation. Once that was cleaned and some cream was applied I had no problem after that.

The shoulder pain however still comes and goes even 6 days after surgery! I think it has been the worst part! My Mom is a nurse and thought to bring me every gas releif remedy she could find. That was the ONLY reason I got any releif at all! She brought Gas X strips, Maalox, and beano. The Gas X was my favorite.I struggled with the pain again all night last night and had an "attack" of sorts this morning but it has been ok for the remainder of the day.

I did fine in the hospital sipping Clear liquids and walking around just fine. Hated the foley but thats another matter.

I think the problems I had after surgery and the reason for my long recovery was I was getting sick when I went in for surgery. I was also only eating appr. 400-800 calories per day for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Surgery was on a Tuesday, Christmas was the weekend before so I had a lot of running to do then and I worked Sunday night 7p-7a and Monday night 7p-3a and had to be at the hospital at 0530 that morning. I think my body was just exhausted or maybe I would have healed faster. So glad to hear all of your stories but I must say I am envious of you speedy recoveries!

Anyone else having trouble producing an appetite? I seem to stay so thirsty that I have no interest in eating. I know I really need to eat but nothing sound appealing to me in the least. I don't want get my body into any trouble by "starving" it! I did this surgery to be HEALTHY and for no other reason (even though I have 150 plus #s to lose, lol). Any high Protein suggestions (or otherwise) would be greatly appreciated!

I was also banded on the 28th. I did not feel anywhere close to normal until yesterday. I woke up in alot of pain at the incision site and I had gas on my chest that would take my breath away. It was not until Sunday that I felt comfortable sitting and standing but after that I felt great. I found that the GasX strips felt well for me too. I did not have any appetite at all until today but I was only allowed clear liquids for the first weeks anyway. Tonight I was able to have a bowl of cream of chicken Soup and I loved it. As far as Protein goes, I cannot say enough for the EAS whey chocolate protein. I found that it was much better than anything else that I tried and it has 23 grams of protein a serving and tastes just fine mixed with Water. Keep up the great work.

I was banded on 12/27 . I cant say I had an appetite untill I got home , The gas pains brought me to my knees and I thought I was having a heartattack because of the gas pain in my shoulder AND I could not burp for a few days however, Gas X to the rescue !!! I have discomfort in my port site and some intestional gas that growls and groans. I did have some coffee and felt nauseous a bit after . Just the thought of 12 lbs I have to say has gave me such positive thoughts .

I have shopped , clean , drove and walked .......positive thoughts Everyone

You need to eat!!! Can you get Protein shakes down, chicken broth, greek yogurt? When you move onto mushies - low fat chili and more Soups. Can puree chicken and put it in the Soup.

I was banded 12/27. I still have some gas feelings in my chest. I have been starving all along, but I started taking Protein Shakes earlier this week to curb the appetite, even though I was supposed to still be on clear liquids. I pretty much feel back to normal, but I get a heaviness in my chest at times, I guess it is gas or just too much Protein Shake sitting there. All in all, I feel fine.

I'm so sorry to hear that you all have shared some of my struggles! I actually cried reading some of the posts from people who said they were up the next day doing laundry and cleaning.

I too am happy with my weightloss thus far. I am supposed to be doing high Protein full liquids including Jello, pudding, and yogurt. I just can't do the protein!! I already have such a little desire to eat and the thought of putting high Protein pudding in my mounth disgusts me! I did soft scamble an egg earlier and made it through most of that ok. I figured that would be a good way to get some protein in.

I had surgery on 12/27 and have to say that while my gas pain doesn't seem as bad as some peoples, it hasn't been a quick recovery for me. I didn't feel like leaving the house until 3 days later and even that was for short spirts. I went to the gym to walk today but did low incline (3) at a slow pace (1.8) and 30 minutes was enough. Keep in mind I was doing 30-45 on the ellipical before surgery. I too don't have much of an appetite and have been forcing the Water and protiens down. My surgeon had me on mushies about 3 days out and adding in normal foods 5 days out, which was great until I tried something a little more chewy and had a horrible painful hiccup. I was afraid after that to try foods, thinking those hiccups could cause a slip or my band not to heal correctly. Today i resorted back to a protien shake at lunch just to make sure I'm getting in enough protien. I'm still really nervous about not doing something right. I guess it's times like these that I really need this site so I know I'm not alone...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
