Stopped losing and actually gained just three weeks after surgery - why??

Recommended Posts

So, I was banded on December 8th and as of last week was down 24 pounds (from the day I started my pre-op diet the day after Thanksgiving). Since I saw my surgeon on the 23rd, I have gained back three pounds from my lowest (on my home scale) weight. I am very confused - I am on solid food now, and my first fill is scheduled for the 17th of this month. I am tracking calories and average around 1200 calories per day. I have also been cleared to exercise and am going to the gym 3 times a week. Why has my weight loss stalled already and what can I do to fix this? Help!!

It's not uncommon for weight loss to slow down when you move to solids. If you are phsically able to excise more often you should do so. I do an hour of moderate swimming daily and my loss is slow in my opinion.

I can understand. I was banded 12-14 and lost preop and 1 week post op. Nothing week 2 and week 3 I'm the same despite low calorie intake and exercise.

I have two thoughts, quite possibly we are gaining muscle from exercising.

And if you have no restriction, the tool is there but not yet ready for use. Meaning you have a band but until you get a fill it's not really doing much after your swelling went down from surgery.

Hang in there. I am confident it will happen.

Did the same thing, gained 3 lbs about 6 days post op, that was just TOM weight and was gone the next day, and didn't lose another pound until I got on the scale this morning and I'll be 3 weeks post op on Tuesday. It was a really frustrating 2 weeks.

I have read and been told that not everyone loses weight right after surgery. Some gain some lose some maintain. After your fill you should start seeing a difference. I think sometimes our body just needs time to catch up with all that is going on.

Best of luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
