I'll wager that the wave of the future will be "e-cigarettes" cuz they are cool. You will see people in clubs and restaurants smoking them like they are stylin.....LOL

Rachel I just want to say I'm a smoker my surgery is in 10 days I asked my surgeon and he straight up told me he has never seen a smoker have complications during or after surgery and he has performed over 2,000 surgeries I also have friends who smoke who had the surgery and none have had any complications. I am going to start chantex so I asked him when should I start and he told me to start when I'm rdy to quit smoking whether that be before or after surgery! I hope this helps

Interesting. My doctor said he wouldn't do the procedure unless you'd been a non smoker for at least a year, and he goes so far as to TEST YOU to see if you smoke! I guess I can appreciate him being careful and all, but jeez......

The one thing I can add is that I felt like I had a harder time coming out of anesthesia and clearing my lungs, and I do atribute that to being a smoker.

I think its a mandate for the dr's in the States to be strict and requirement at least 2 weeks of non-smoking before surgery that involves anesthesia (tho a year out I think is extreme and I reminds of life insurance policy requirements haha) due to the fact that you can get pneumonia. But I think if a doctor gives a green light to smoke no matter what, thats a red flag to me. If your doctor will still preform the surgery no matter your smoking status or amount I still think it's best to cut back as much as possible before surgery if you arent able to quit. The less you smoke the less risk of anything at all surgery related or not. Maybe the dr said not to quit unless your ready because he feels same way I do...if you dont want to quit and arent mentally and physically determined to not smoke, then you will continue justifying a cigarette. I say this as a person who has quit smoking for a year and a half and 6 months ago picked it back up and is trying to quit again.

I mean by all means it is way healther and less of a risk if u quit smoking before surgery but I told me doctor the truth if I quit while doing my pre op diet I'm gonna eat a freaking building so he just advised me to quit when I'm ready. I figured if I start chantix after surgery like he advised then I won't beable to smoke or eat so it seems like a better decision for me. He did say to just not smoke morning of surgery and ill be fine I'm also young I'm 21 and I've only beein smoking 2 yrs and I smoke less than a pack a day I normally just smoke a full pack every day and a half. Normally I open a pack and won't open another one til the next evening. So I'm not a heavy smoker. If it wasn't for my fiance telling me he will 100 percent support me thru my weight loss journey (cuz he is scared for me) if I just quit smoking with him after surgery. So I'm gonna quit with him to show the support back.

Hi, I'm new here. I just went for my first consultation and found out my insurance will cover the surgery. I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to chime in. I've been vaping for almost a year now, so when the P.A. asked if I smoked, I said no. The paperwork does not ask about nicotine usage (although I'm on the lowest nic possible at this point). I'm wondering if they *do* check labwork for nicotine, would you still be disqualified, even if it's through an electronic cig (i.e. Personal Vaporizer/PV)? I do NOT consider myself a smoker. I was a smoker for 17 years and I QUIT.

Oh, and for those who were asking, you can find out more info about vaping on e-cigarette-forum.com if you want. :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
