Being banded in Canada

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new here. I decided to be banded after a life of being heavy. I'm at a BMI of 30 now. Any other Canadians here? I'll be paying about $18K for it and it's not covered by insurance I think. Did anyone have it done elsewhere and are happy with the results. I see ads for bands being installed for $4K... Not sure which country this is done in :) My DH is freaking out and is scared that there may be really bad complications.

Why don't you look into getting it done in Mexico? Dr Ortega has a great rep. and even does after care and fills to get you going. At a BMI of 30 you aren't that big but the lap band should still help get you on the right track to being thin. Tell your DH not to worry, the lap band surgery is quite safe and an easy one for surgeons to do. Recovery is usually uneventful and most people just complain about gas pains (they pump gas into your abdomen to be able to see and that hurts a bit afterwards). I had a c-section and the lap band was a walk in the park in comparison. The important thing in the process is patience. Losing 1-2 pounds per week is great, but a week seems like a long time...Patience help those 1and 2 pound amounts build to 20 and 30 pound amounts etc. Distraction helps a lot too!

Good luck on your journey!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
