Hi Everyone.

I am considering having the Lap Band surgery and I am so glad I found this website! I see a lot of people have to do a pre-op diet. I was wondering what the reason is for doing this? I would love to hear from you guys! Thanks!

Jennifer

Most surgeons want you to lose 10 to 15lbs before surgery for your own safety because being over weight and having surgery is a risk in its self. If you dont lose weight on your own before surgery most doctors will put you on a Liquid Protein diet before surgery about two weeks. I never had to do that its all about your doctor.

Losing weight before surgery is good but as far as I was told by my doctor, the real purpose for the pre op diet is to shrink the live. Obese people have fatty livers. The liver lays on top of the stomach were the band is placed. It is much easier for the surgeon to move the liver out of the way if it is not so fat during the surgery. It makes the surgery a more safe procedure by reducing the size of the liver.

My surgeon also told me it had to do with shrinking the liver.

Your pre-op diet may depend on how much weight you need to lose and how "fatty" your doctor suspects your liver is.

You will read on this forum that there are varying types of pre-op diets :)

My Dr. also said the pre-op diet is for the purpose of shrinking the liver.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
