As for whether you can drink shakes, that is up to your Dr. I was allowed to progress to shakes at 5 days, some people are on Clear Liquids longer. Yeah the Isopure drinks are nasty, I could not get my Protein in during the clear liquids because all the clear Protein Drinks are nasty. I am drinking the Unjury shakes, I like chocolate splendor, mixed with milk, it tastes just like chocolate milk, and the vanilla, not sure how to describe it, but it is good. They're not thick, but they are filling to me.

I am drinking the Mega Protein Shakes mixed with Water not milk. This was after trying about four other kinds that I thought tasted like mold mixed with vomit. I, too was allowed, Protein shakes the day after surgery, but as mentioned quite often on this site the different surgeons have different ideas.

Hi!! I am four days post banding and not using any Protein just yet. But I will say the Unjury brand is my favorite (used it quite a bit before surgery) and they do have a chicken broth flavor that would be considered "clear liquids." It's pretty tasty actually, tastes almost exactly like chicken broth and not at all like protein.

online only. www.unjury.com

if you're cleared for Protein drinks, check out the Syntrax Nectars too. www.si03.com (they used to have sample kits at about 1.00/packet.. but u have to write them and inquire)

I rarely used Protein drinks during my post-op period. Did just fine without them. In fact, I just gave away a canister of powder that I had cause I wasn't using it.

Hey there :). I would do what your doctor/nurses tell you to do during your initial post op phase. However, as soon as I was allowed a full liquid diet (which for me began at week 3) I immediately started Protein Shakes as I knew I could never get in enough Protein daily since I was not a big meat eater to begin with. I chose Jillian Michaels brand, vanilla and chocolate. I mixed with fat free milk a bit of ice AND here's the BEST part, added two tablespoons of sugar free instant chocolate or vanilla, or cheesecake, or french vanilla (you get the point) pudding mix. It thickens the shake AND adds a bunch more flavor and at like 30 addl calories for two tbs (some people like just one for 15 calories) I found it made ALL the difference in the quality and taste of the shake. I've used the 'trick' with each Protein Powder I've bought and it makes them all taste better. This might help you since many of them as outragously expensive. So try the JM brand (walmart $10 or $11 a canister).

I am 5 days post-op and I heard that some people were drinking Protein shakes already. I tried the clear liquid Protein drinks (ie Isopure) but those are DISGUSTING. Is anyone drinking mixed or pre-mixed Protein already and if so, is your body able to process that this soon?

Thanks

In need of protein

I found the best protein mix that I think you will really enjoy, it's called 4 Ever Fit Vanilla flavor. You can mix it with 8 ounces of Water or milk, I use milk it taste better and you get more volume. You can purchase this online with Vitamin World. Also, I bought flavors, coconut, banana & chocolate (no calories) to change it up. It is very satisfying. :)

I first got samples from my bariatric surgeon but I have always ordered online. The site is http://unjury.com and they have pretty low shipping rates too. I love all their flavors!!

When I was on clear liquids my doctor told me to just make sure I kept hydrate but I was also only on clears for 2 days. I now use the EAS chocolate fudge Protein Shake and i get them from Walmart or Sam's club.

I was able to have Protein Shakes the day after my surgery. I use Muscle Milk Light. These have been the best tasting for me. I get a case of 6 for about $25 in BJ's. I also use sugar free Carmation Instant Breakfast, which tastes good too. I didn't use the CIB in the beginning, but but now I use it for breakfast or a snack when i have to get my Protein in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
