My first plateau - and it came too early!

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

I was banded on November 30, and did really well for about 3 weeks - down 12 pounds! But I am approaching my 5 week mark post surgery, and have been at the same weight for twoo weeks! No one else I know has plateaued this early! Help!!

Had you been on a protracted diet presurgery (not just a 1-2 week liquid diet)? I'd been on a stricked diet for 8 months presurgery. After the initial shock of surgery my loss really slowed down. Not sure if you are female but TOM really affects Water weight gain.

I understand how you feel. I lost 9 lbs my first week, since then nothing. I am 12 days post op. I go for my first fill in 3.5 weeks and the only thing I am thinking right now is how will I look and feel if I go in and have lost nothing. I feel once I start eating real food, I will start losing, I hope

Honk -

I was only on a restricted 1200 cal diet for two weeks before surgery, lost 4 pounds, then the 12 since surgery. But no loss for two weeks! Wondering if this could be due to transition from liquids to soft diet?

I know! I am hoping there is some movement before my fill in less than two weeks, otherwise I will be at the same weight as my two week post op (or close to it). Good luck on the food transition...shortly after going from liquids to soft food, my loss stopped... GRRR!

If you have the ok from your doctor, I would start an excersise program. It made all the difference for me in my weight loss journey. Start slow and gradually increase duration and/or intensity.

Yes, it most likely is a transition into more solid foods. Don't worry about it. I'm discovering that stalls are just my body's way of saying "been there, done that, think I'll just coast"...and the way to shock it out of a stall is to change up what I'm doing. I'm reading up on carb cycling right now as I've had a number of people tell me they never hit stalls because they keep their body in a perpetual state of 'wondering'.

Yeah I started back at the gym yesterday. I only was able to do 15 min on the elliptical, but I plan to work my way back up slowly

HI...congrats on your progress so far! You are doing great!

You are in the phase, often referred to as "Bandster Hell". Once you start getting fills you will start to see the scale move again. This phase will pass.....my surgeon told me that was when I needed to focus most on developing new eating habits (like chewing chewing chewing....small bites etc). So far, my surgeon has been right on track!

Keep up the great work.

I have lost 45lbs in about three weeks. I am two weeks post surgery. I started eating food yesterday and I didnt lose any weight today. I think I will walk more after my first doctors visit next week. I hope I hadnt reached a plateau.

Thanks everybody. Sounds like I need to exercise more, watch my carbs, and be patient until my first fill. Has anyone else hit a long plateau this early though?

My best friend and I had surgery on the same day last December 09 I lost weight rapidly she had three fills before she even lost one pound then it started coming off. I just had my first fill one year post op but I was at a 5 month stand still. Couldnt do much because I moved and couldnt find a surgeon until recently who would do an adjustment. I have lost 5lbs in two days. Everyone is different. Everyone has different results dont get discouraged. I wasnt happy about not losing weight for five months but 70lbs was a huge weight loss to begin with with no fills. You have to go with the flow its all trial and error everyone is different just be patient it will happen.

The same thing happened to me. two-three weeks after surgery my weight yo-yoed at the same 3 lbs up and down. Now is the time where you have to really work at it. Start exercising even if its just walks up and down the block, or what I did was get dancing games for the wii...since i have lost another 10lbs. Also, once you get a fill the weight will come off easier. Good luck i hope everything works out for you!

I was banded on 12/13 and lost 7 pounds in the first two days after the surgery. Since then (17 days now), I haven't lost a single pound, and have bounced around between gaining 5 pounds and back to even. Had I simply stayed on the pre-surgery diet and not had the surgery, I have no doubt that I would be down an additional 10+ pounds.

It's extremely frustrating and is making me begin to think that I didn't make the best choice in getting this surgery. I am close to 200 pounds overweight, and I seriously need to lose some weight to get me to the point where I am not a health risk.

I'm eating a tiny fraction of what I ate prior to surgery, and it's doing NOTHING for me.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
