Trying to make an informed decision

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This is my first post...I hope I am doing this in the right place! I am seriously considering getting the lap band. I have spent hours online doing as much research as I can and am strongly leaning towards Dr. Kuri in Mexico. I would love any and all feedback. Thanks so much:)

Hi and Welcome !!

I just wanted to say good luck with your research and decision. I had my surgery here in NJ so I'm sorry I can't help you with Dr. Kuri.

But welcome !!! Hugs :)

I was banded by Kuri in April and it's going well so far. I'm a slow loser, but it's coming off! I had a good experience in MX. It's not the right decision for everyone so research well and know what's ahead of you. If I could have stayed in the US for surgery I would have preferred it, but Kuri is so experienced I went and have no regrets so far. Research well! Welcome to LBT!

Thanks so much for responding so quickly! As you can see from the hour I wrote my first post...its kind of been all consuming. I seem to have a hard time sleeping these days. Kathy, what about going to MX was different for you from in the US. A friend of mine had hers done there and said the only things that stood out was the language barrier between herself and the nurses and that the hospital (while extremely clean) was older. I would love to here more about your experience, and why you would choose to have it here if you were to do it again. If you are burned out on re-telling your story you could even direct me to other threads. Thank you for the welcome NJChick, and I hope to talk to you both soon!

Yes welcome!! I am a bit bold here, but I would absolutely NOT use Kuri.

Got a fill from him and took 13 stabs till he hit the port. No Thanx not the Man as many say..

I had my band done in TJ, MX by Dr. Huacuz at the Huacuz sugical center. I found him at Group Lapband Trip to Mexico it is a group trip and they try to take multiple people so its a group. You meet others and go thru the lapband journey with them. It was great. I was very happy with the staff and how perfessional they were. Some of the night time nurses didn't speak english but it was not that much of a problem. They know when you ask for pain meds or Water, or anything you need. I was given exceptional care. Dr. Huacuz also does plastic surgery and if it comes down to me needing it, I would go to him in a heartbeat. The price in MX is awsome. Roundtrip and a 3 day 2 nite stay cost a total of $8,000. The coordinator even arranged my flight and pick up from the airport, and she was actually with me the whole time. I am so happy I chose MX. Being a self pay it really saved me loads of money. For fills, I could go back to MX for free, but I live in GA so it would be expensive. I use fill centers usa for fills. Some people have not had good experiences with them, but I am happy so far.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
