Newbie with pre-op protein concerns

Recommended Posts

Hi, all!

Well, I've been through the approval process and my surgery is January 4, 2011...right around the corner!! I am both excited and terrified. The pre-op diet it kicking my butt in the worst kind of way! I cannot stand any of the Protein shakes, and trust me, I've tried them all!! Every one of them make me sick to my stomach. I am literally living off Carnation Instant Breakfast in the morning and broth/gelatin/sugar free popsicles the rest of the day. I know I am no where near close to the 70g of Protein that I was told to consume per day. I am concerned this could cause a problem during, or after surgery. Any suggestions?

My surgery is the 10th, so I'm suffering right along with you. I'm allowed things like sugar free pudding and Jello as well as 1/2c no sugar added apple sauce, sugar free yougurt, and low carb veggies. If you have Protein powder, try mixing it in with some sugar free pudding; it's a godsend when you feel like cheating and makes it much more tolerable. I'm not a fan of veggies on their own most of the time, so I've been eating some 0 point WW Soup I froze awhile ago; no fat and taste great! (And I don't think it breaks any of my rules...) I also got some Isopure tea from GNC; it's not the greatest but it's a break from the shakes. Only downside is you have to drink the whole bottle(20oz) to get 40g of protein as opposed to 8oz of the stuff I have to get the same amount. Hang in there, and know you're not alone!

Hiya there....Of course, I don't know what Protein supplements you tried but I usually don't like any of them either. I found though that Unjury brand was great!! I love all the flavors....Chocolate Splendor is great with some iced coffee (decaf, of course), vanilla is good with just milk. strawberry is great with lemonade or plain with Water. But my favorite is the chicken flavor...it really tastes like chicken broth...I'm not big on salt, so I often did one scoop of chicken flavor and one scoop of unflavored to tone down the salt flavor. But each scoop is 20 grams, so it's really easy to get enough protein. Again, I don't like any of the other protein supplement brands, so might be worth it for you.

Are you eating any yogurt? Greek yogurt has a ton more Protein than any others. I really like the Chobani brand. It has about 20 grams of Protein. I'm not supposed to have any yogurt with fruit so I bought the plain variety and I'll just add some sweetener. I'm not crazy about the shakes either but I'm managing to get the muscle milk vanilla down. It's better when you can add frozen fruit because it makes it kinda frothy but no fruit right now. Hope the yogurt idea helps. Good Luck.

Another fan of Unjury - chocalate is my favorite - I make a shake with skim milk (28g protein) every morning for my breakfast sometimes I will add it to my coffee - 20g Protein with the coffee. Did not care for unflavored or chicken. I mixed the strawberry with crystal lite lemonade. See if your doctor has any samples if not you can order online a sample box.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
