Well, today I went and joined the gym. I had surgery October 25 and have not been exercising. I have lost 30 lbs so far (including pre-op diet) and I am ready to add some exercise so I can make more of an impact. Just curious, anyone else joining?

WTG - Start slow and just work yourself up - don't make it such a chore that you won't go - I started out walking 20 min on the treadmill - every few weeks would increase it time/speed etc. Make sure you hit the weights too - muscle burns more calories - so the more muscles you have the more cal you will burn just breathing

I joined the gym 2 weeks prior to surgery 7/07 - I have been going faithfully now for 3.6 yrs !!! IMHO to get healthy you have to do both - eat healthy & exercise..

I know that for me it's what helpped me lose 100 lbs in 11 months.

My exercise consist of - weight training 2 x week - Bootcamp - Yoga/Pliates

I joined the gym but I still hate going. I don't do the weights because I don't want to look like an ass doing it alone. I do 50 mins on the treadmill only because i can zone out and I do enjoy the alone time. I feel the accomplishment but I still don't like it. I hope one day I will be one of those strange people who enjoys exercise.....someday.

I also always gain weight after I go to the gym, I know, muscle weighs more than fat, blah blah blah....I don't need 217 pounds of muscle. The scale needs to go down otherwise the gym is a total waste of time.

I haven't had surgery yet, but I just joined It Figures Monday. Have been there everyday this week and have already lost 2 pounds. Exercise s the best thing we can do for ourselves.

No one at the gym is really paying attention to you - they are working out...

Muscle and fat weight the same - a pound is a pound - a lbs of fat may be larger in size than a pound of muscle but it weighs the same - and it take more that a week of walking on a treadmill to build 1 lbs of muscle..

Just keep going to the gym - just keep moving - for the 1st 8 months that's all I did - I walked on the treadmil increasing my time and speed & incline...

I guess you can call me a gym rat of sorts - I go 4 x a week - not neccessailiy cuz I love it - but I know that if I want to maintain my weight loss - to continue to be healthy - it's something I gotta do - it's better than the alternative (BEING MORBITLY OBESE)..

Also - to get the scales to move you gotta eat healthy & exercise - it's the whole math thingie - calories in vs calories burned - simple math that doesn't change cuz of the band...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
