Aetna - mandatory pre-op weight loss?

Recommended Posts

My doctor didn't say anything to me about it and on the guidelines on the Aetna website, it doesn't say a word about it - BUT - did anyone HAVE or HAVING to lose weight before surgery (that HAS Aetna.....?)

Nope - was encouraged to not gain or lose weight but stay the same during the requirements - I did the 3 month Fast track that in the end still was about 6 months.

I had Aetna and had to go through weight loss program with my Doctor, but honestly I don't think it really mattered that much. I ended up losing about 20 pounds over the course of the 8 months it took to get through everything. I was on the three month fast track too...but it's just too much stuff to fit into three months.

I have Aetna and my doctor stated I should lose weight (although not required by Aetna; she wanted to see me lose). Was suppose to be on the 3 month track, but like folks stated above, I'm past my 3 months. too many appts, to try and squeeze in (especially since i work full time and go to school full time). doesn't help because of the holidays as well.

my doctor although was not specific about how much i should lose, i've only lost about 4 pounds which isn't anything

I have Aetna, they required documentation of all my failed weight loss attempts, and had to be in at least 3 months of supervised program, but i do not recall then having a specific weight loss amount. My surgeon required a 10 ib weight loss prior to surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
