Nausea & Dizziness

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum and I have been enjoying the posts! Thanks for the information and encouragement!. My question: I was banded on Dec 15th and stuck to the liquid diet for 1 week. I have been eating mushy foods since, but I've experimented with a few other things over the Christmas holiday. :( Long story short, today I woke up, ate a banana and took my pills, but felt nauseous and dizzy about 1/2 hour later. Then I had a Greek yougurt trying to calm my stomach down thinking I didn't eat enough Protein. It worked for about 10 minutes then the problem came right back. Evertime I eat something, I feel better, but temporarily. I have felt this way ALL day and it doesn't get worse, but it doesn't get better either. Is this normal and what can I do about it? Is it possible that my "cheats" have affected my band? Help!

I would say you are not getting enough Protein in your diet. Are you required to drink Protein Drinks in the mushy phase? I was required to have a minimum of three protein drinks per day when in the liquid and mushy phase. Now that I am on solids, I am required a minimum of 60 grams of protein per day.

Another concern is your blood pressure. Are you on bp meds? If so, how much weight have you lost including the pre-op diet and since surgery? I am on bp meds and have lost 38 lbs. When I stand up, I find myself getting dizzy. I think my bp is too low now with the weight loss and bp meds combined.

I hope this helps and you feel better soon!

I think you may be right about the Protein. They required 5 shakes a day in the liquid phase, but now that I'm in the mushy, I'm supposed to get 80g of protein from regular food and that isn't happening. Without being able to eat "meat" other than tuna fish type stuff, I'm not coming close to 80g. I'm going to get a flavorless Protein Powder to supplement my meals.

I'm not on BP meds but my BP has fluctuated wildly during this whole process. I've seen numbers that my teenage daughter has! :) Maybe it was just too low today?

Overall, I've lost 42lbs pre-op, but only 5lbs post-op.I got this surgery because I can lose weight on a diet, but the minute I start eating normally again, it comes back like gangbusters. I've actually gained 2 pounds this week and I'm discouraged. No, I haven't had any fillings yet, so I'm "normal" as far as my stomach capacity, and maybe I've taken advantage of that after being restricted to 960 calories/day pre-op. I wondered if I was dehydrated too.

Thanks for the reply and the encouragement!

I didn't lose weight the first few days after surgery either (banded 12-29-2010) which was very discouraging because I was barely drinking Water and very little broth. Then I remembered the bag of IV Fluid they pumped into my body. It takes a while for that excess fluid to be removed from your body. I too got banded to keep the weight off. I have been on everything except for the South Beach Diet and every time I lose 70 to 90 pounds just to gain it back within a year or two. It was nice to read that somebody had the same issue I did. So thanks for that. I have these wonderful Protein Shakes that are made by "BSN" they are called "Better than dessert" they come in chocolate coconut candy bar, banana pudding, cinnamon role, and vanilla pudding. The vanilla is my favorite to mix with fruit or add other flavors and the banana pudding is my very favorite. They have 20g Protein per 8 oz and 3grams of sugar. Conratulations on the 42 lbs pre-op that's awesome.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
