Reflux when laying down to sleep

Recommended Posts

I had my 2nd fill about a month ago and have severe problems when I lie down to sleep. I am ok for about 30 minutes, but then I get horrible reflux and must get out of bed to vomit. The only way I have been able to sleep is sitting up, I did not have this problem before the latest fill which has already been loosened a bit one time. The good news is that the lbs keep disappearing and I'm now well below my 8 month goal. Does anyone know of a solution to this reflux problem?

Thanks.

This is not good. You should go and have them remove a small amount. I know we like the weight loss but it can cause big problem in the end.

listen to everyone... you may not think it but you are definately over-filled.

how do i know? i was having the same exact problems 6 months after i was banded. i was having the horrible reflux during the night... almost afraid i was going to choke to death. yet i didn't say anything to my doctor because i was losing weight. after 3 months i couldn't take it anymore. i had scared myself one too many nights.

i went in and he looked at my band under flouro and my pouch was dilated but hadn't slipped... yet. he took most of the liquid out and over the next few months did small fills. thankfully my stomach went back to normal and my band didn't slip but the longer you wait the better chance it could happen to you!!

You need to stop eating and drinking 3 hours before you go to sleep. Add more pillows to your bed. I use two under my head and hug one. You can't drink anything!! If you need to then rinse your mouth but that's it. It's the drinking and eating that does this. Try this first and see if it works then get an unfill.

Call and make an appt to go in for a little unfill. Doesn't have to be much, .25 or .5 can be enough.

UNTIL you can get in, don't eat anything solid or dense for 3 to 4 hours before going to bed. Try drinking some warm tea about 30 minutes before you go to bed.

Elevate the head of your bed .. not just pillows, but put bricks or something sturdy under the headboard. If you absolutely can't do that, sleep in a recliner.

Please don't ignore this symptom, it can lead to band slippage or even aspiration pneumonia.. neither of which is desirable.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
