This journey has me thinking...

I don't think I know how to shop for thin person clothes. I'm 32 years old and a mom of 2. Where will I shop when I don't need to go to the "fat chick" stores anymore? I'm excited to get there, but nervous at the same time. Am I crazy??

That is true! I feel like I don't even know what my style is or what I'd like to wear. I've been so limited for so long, the only stores near me that sell plus size clothing are Lane Bryant and Fashoin Bug Plus. It's like if you are plus sized you must like only these styles! I do have to say that plus sized clothing has come a long way in recent years, but there's still not much selection.

Nice thing is when you are out of "Woman's" sizes you can shop ANYWHERE for clothes.

I can't wait for that! It's so frustrating depending on Lane Bryant, like right now, NONE of their pants fit correctly, what am I supposed to do?!

I like Ann Taylor for work wear. I have never had a big stomach area, all of my weight has been evenly distributed with a bias towards my thighs. You can order size 16 and 18 online. They are smaller in the stomach area and the rises don't come to your mid thigh.

I'm having trouble at Lane Bryant too. Im short in my waist area and all of the pants from there come almost to my boobs!

I know it sounds dumb, but I can't wait to go to stupid Abercrombie and Fitch and buy a pair of jeans. I've wanted to wear them since junior high! Lol!

I can't wait to buy a regular pair of jeans and the kind with the elastic band at the top! I tend to have a bigger tummy and small thighs so "big girl" buttonfly jeans are huge and look like clown pants! I just want to buy normal clothes. Won't be for a while since I have years worth of different sizes to keep me out of stores for now. Its just when I get into the sizes I haven't seen since high school!

Good luck and have fun!

I feel similiar...my one year out is January 8th and so far I have lost 87lbs which has brought me from a 22/24 to a L and a 12. I still go into Lane Bryant but nothing fits me, but I am still drawn to plus size stores. I loved loved Ashley Stewary prior now its depressing because she is only a plus sized store, though being able to wear a Victoria's Secret bra is nice. I went into the Express and tried on size 12 pair of dress pants and kept telling myself they would never fit unless they had some give or elastic in them yet they did. (though I wouldn't pay the price unless there was a clearance or a coupon) It's not necessarily depressing and I am happy but I am not "excited" per say. I have 3 huge bags of really trendy, nice, plus size clothes and I can't wear them. Some tops I kept that look okay flowy but pants are another story. I have a really cute New Year's dress and maybe the weight loss will truly sink in because I feel the same. At least my Lane Bryant charge card works at Fashion Bug.

I'm a size 10 (down from a 24) and definitely have this problem. I now have an all J. Crew wardrobe just because I'm totally paralyzed by all the options. A good problem to have, but in my vision I'm supposed to be far better dressed than this!

Two thoughts here:

  1. Personal shopper - some even modestly priced stores have these and if budget is an issue, you can let them know what your limits are. If you can find a great shopper, his/her help would be invaluable. There is no charge for this service. Years ago, I developed a relationship with the manager at my local dress barn - she would set aside things that she thought I would like and I would stop by and take home what I wanted. I am sure it helped her sales numbers and I appreciated the service as I was a busy career person at that point.
  2. Thrift store, second hand store... most have a dressing room and you can always donate/sell your larger items as you shrink. Even small towns can have some awesome items.

That was the where - the how is another matter. Find someone that you think looks great and ask them for their help or find pictures that you like and carry them with you...

Good luck!

I like the thrift store idea, especially in the losing weight phase! It will be interesting to figure out how to dress again! Good luck all and happy losing!

I only buy stuff at thrift stores--Salvation Army, Goodwill, and others. I have gone from a size 26 to 16 (or 14 on a good day) and I haven't bought anything new since this journey began over a year ago. I feel like it is a waste of money for me until I get to a size that I will stick with for awhile. I am still losing (slowly) and have 20 more pounds to go. I still think I will use thrift stores after I am at goal. I like the idea of cheap clothes (and some are very nice) and recycling what someone can't use anymore.

I know exactly what you are talking about, but won't it be nice to not have to wear those ole granny panties anymore. I was banded 09\02 and have lost 37 pounds and gone from a 24 to 18. I'm already in smaller panties but can't wait to get into some of those more stylish Victoria Secret looks. LOL

I can't wait to be able to buy some classy business attire. I hate that they think all fat, tall women like bright or floral prints. I want a classic cut suit. With a nice plain silk blouse. All the plus sized blouses are embellished with something hokey.

I am down from a 26/28 to a (loose) 22 right now. I have issues with my belly......I had emergency abdominal surgery in May...complicated by 3 abdominal abscesses, requiring drains etc......so my belly is mis-shapen and lopsided. I don't anticipate it shrinking much and already know I will need a panniculectomy. But I suppose that is what they make Spanx for !!!!!

I need to have surgery on my foot....I have been putting it off because I couldn't imagine hauling this fat ass around on crutches for 30 days. I can't wait to have the surgery because I can then buy nice shoes.....surgery is in the spring......sexy shoes by mid summer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
