Emotional Eating

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Thank you for reading. I'm trying to deteremine if a Lapband is for me. I need to loose 75lbs. Aside from the excess weight deeply and negatively impacting my self esteem I have terribly low energy during the day and sleap apnea. My number one issue in my life is my weight.

I overeat primarily due to emotional reasons (stress, anxiety, self worth issues). Will a Lapband help me loose weight or will I just restreach my stomach? What should I be thinking about?

Thanks and happy new year.

Peter

It will most definitely help you. I would take the time and go to www.lapband.com to see more details about the surgery before you make your final decision. And if you've already done that and still are having difficulties on deciding, ask yourself these questions:

1. am you willing to give up some foods that I eat? (mostly sweets, breads, pastas, etc.)

2. this isn't just a diet, this surgery is for life. are you willing to go the distance?

3. you will need lots of support. do you have the support that I know I'll need?

(this website gives you plenty of support!)

You are guarenteed to lose weight but how much is up to you and how determined you are to lose weight. This surgery isn't as invasive as the gastric bypass and you'll have less healing and hospital time too. I knew that this surgery was right for me when I couldn't stand to look at myself in the mirror anymore and regret everything I ate. I'm close to having my surgery and I know that I won't regret it. There are lots of people who wish they had this surgery done years prior to their ages now. This is a wonderful opportunity but make sure you are willing to be a huge participant towards reaching your goals.

Peter, the band is a tool and your choice if you chose to do WLS will be up to you. AS with any WLS there are ways to cheat and not loose or even one can gain weight. You have to work it! Your behavior, eating habits, exercise habits, and how you deal with your eating issues. Definitely do some research and see which one fits into your life style and makes you comfortable. It may be the band, it might be something else.

I too am a stress eater and I work at it everyday. I get up from my desk and walk when I want to reach for the candy jar because i'm stressed. By the way the candy jar is gone and I keep anything that might tempt me out of the house, car, office or where ever I am. If I am in a social situation, I walk away, grab a glass/bottle of flavored Water and congratulate myself on making such a smart move. I also have a very strong support system, both at home and at work. I am truly blessed to have a partner in my hubby and to be loved by those that I work with. I exercise everyday because if I have down time, I will make excuses as to why I cannot or don't have time to exercise. My reward is knowing that I am empowering myself and becoming my own being without the crutch of food!

Take care I wish the best for you!:)

The best answer I got from banded people - LB helps to eat less, more accurately you will eat less to avoid pain of overeating - feels like heart attach, or expending sponge in your chest.

Hope to have my surgery in a few months... keeping my fingers crossed but mouth are still open :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
