Just a Curious Newbie going to start my journey

Hello Everyone,

After being 100 pounds over weight for a long time I have started the process of looking into WLS. I found that the Lap band seemed right for me. I have my first seminar Jan 26 at Univ of Penn in Philadelphia. The doctor Im interested in meeting with is Dr Noel Williams. Im looking to finally be able to exercise and enjoy outdoor activities. My weight has never let me do anything. I just turned 40 and I did a lot of research on this surgery. My insurance BCBS Personal Choice PPO said it is covered. Im just trying to find my way around here and read all the information here that you all share. This will help me in learning the new way of life that I will have. I know its a step process, first attend the seminar, then meet the doc, then tests, then the surgery. Im hoping to return to work after 1 week, (I have a desk job 9 to 5) If anyone here would care to share their stories, comments, advice, etc, I would love to hear from you. Also will I need someone to stay with me for the recovery process? I do live alone, but I can have my boyfriend stay if necessary. Thanks again new friends!

Welcome to LBT! You are right, there is a lot of information here just for taking the time to read it.

I didn't have anyone stay with me at all, but everyone is different.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

I think it would help to have someone around for a few days after surgery just to help you out, but it's not absolutley necessary. The recovery is not too bad at all - I was back at work in 4 days. I slept pretty much 24-7 the 1st 1-2 days, got up and walked when I could. Anyways, welcome to LBT - you will find tons of info here and if you have a specific ? just ask! Good luck!

To me, the best thing you can do now is to make SURE, that you understand why you are fat. Sure, you eat too much and don't exercise enough (so say we all), but you must go deeper. The band is only a tool and not the solution. If you don't get to a deep and truthful understanding of your current situation, then the band will be ineffective in the long term.

I'm not saying you need a ton of counseling, but you do need some considerable time in self-examination. If your issues are emotional, then you may indeed need professional help. If it is a lack of education, then get education. If it is a lack of support, then I suggest you look at OA and/or Weight Watchers. If it is a lack of desire, then take a hard look at where your health is heading.

Once you come to terms with who you are and why you are in this situation, then you can determine whether the band is a good fit for you. As an example, some get banded thinking that the band will make them unable to eat bad things or to somehow fill an emotional void. NOT true. Sure, it works well with the volume of food you can eat at one time, but doesn't stop you from pounding a large milkshake or munching on chocolate all day.

With the band, YOU will still be responsible for wise choices.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
