Afraid to step on the scale

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow has been one week since surgery. I wasn't required a pre-op diet, only Clear liquids the day before surgery, so as of today it's been one week of no food! Scary sounding... Was anyone else afraid to step on the scale after surgery? I don't feel any different, and I'm afraid that if I step on there and I'm only down 2 pounds or something I'll be bummed. How often do you guys weigh yourself?

Also, I don't feel hungry at all, such a nice feeling! Makes it easier since I'm only on the full liquid stage, but also hard because I really have to force myself to drink, and I'm afraid I'm not getting enough nutrition. Does everyone else get their daily required nutrition in?

Thanks so much!

The scale can be your enemy or your friend, it just really depends on your mentality. As far as weight loss, 2lbs a week is the ultimate goal in the long run, however, right now you could have lost 2lbs or 5lbs. You won't feel different for a while. So don't beat yourself up. Glad you are still feeling full since surgery on just liquids. If you want, wait until you go to the Doctors for your post op, it will be a surprise then, like a present. Good luck. As far as proper nutrition, make sure you are getting your Protein, it promotes healing and prevents hair loss and other ailments.

I am now 3 weeks 3 days post op, and I totally know how you are feeling. I was anxious to step on the scale. I wanted to know how much I had lost, but scared I hadn't lost much. I made myself wait until my post op appointment, which was about 10 days post op, to be weighed and I had lost 15 pounds. I could feel that I had lost by the way my clothes fit, but was eccstatic that I had lost that much :) I now weigh myself once a week on my surgery day and as of Monday have lost 24 pounds. I have clothes of all sizes because I have been anywhere from a low of 175 to a high of 244 in the last 2 years and finally had the courage to try on a pair of jeans that I haven't worn in over a year hoping that I could at least get them over my knees, and they fit!!! A little loosely even!!! I don't have any hunger also still and am enjoying it very much. My doctor said that it should last a few weeks, so I am sadly waiting for it to end. I know I am not getting the required nutrition because my doctor said do not eat if you are not hungry, so I don't eat. I spoke with the nurse at my post op appointment about this and she said that it is ok, but I need to get more protien. I do take 2 kids chewable vitamins a day and 3 tums with extra Calcium, and since I am now able to eat solids, I eat a couple ounces of meat every other day and that has helped a ton. Good luck with your journey ;)

Honestly I am awful with my scale, I step on it like everytime I go into the bathroom (almost). But I have made a commitment to myself, I will only care about the number once a week. I was banded on Monday, so that is going to be my weigh in day. I work in the morning too, so when I wake up I will go into the bathroom and weigh myself and that will be the number I log. I know people say weighing yourself every day is bad, but I kind of feel it helps keep me on track. If I see the number is a little up, I may try to push a little more and do a little extra at the gym or something. Thoug I haven't been to the gym in 1.5 weeks, I did not have to energy on my pre op diet and now I am just 3 days post op, and I am not even going to think about going until my post op appointment

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
