Manda87 3 Posted December 21, 2010 I'm on the NuvaRing, and I was wondering if weight loss can effect the potency (potency? I can't think of a better adjective, lol) of birth control. Like can it make it less effective? I'm a day late on my period, and that's why I'm asking. I'm sure (at least I hope) it will come soon, but it's usually here by now. Any advice would help. From what I have read in medical articles, the heavier you are the less effective birth control can be so I would think the loosing weight would make the ring more effective. Also, when you loose weight, it causes your hormones to readjust because fat makes estrogen like compounds. As that is happening, it can cause disruptions in your period. It you are concerned, take a home pregnancy test or go to the ob/gyn or pcp for a visit to check for pregnancy or hormonal imbalances.

Elizabeth, I remember reading something like that, but I forgot! lol So I would probably have a higher chance of getting pregnant while being heavier. lol I'll take a pregnancy test if it doesn't come by Christmas. I'm under a lot of stress so maybe that's why it's late also. Thanks for your reply!
Manda87 3 Posted January 3, 2011 My sister was on Yasmin and she mentioned that it didn't give her any "Water retention" and that she actually lost some weight with it. What does this have to do with my post? Nothing...
ape087 1 Posted January 6, 2011 Im on the nuva ring too. My dr's told me to wait for a month after my surgery to use it again. She said that most people experience their rapid weight loss during their first 4-6 weeks, and that rapid weight loss is when the birth control would be at risk of being in effective. I put mine back in after my 6 weeks, and it seems to be fine, and Im right on track. Like everyone says, if you're worried take a test.
Ambersue48 0 Posted January 16, 2011 I am on the NuvaRing too but I am only 3 days post-surgery. I was told from the very beginning to use a second form of birth control because you become very fertile after losing a lot of weight.
