I was banded on Monday and am on a liquid diet. Today I eat a very small serving of mashed potatoes. Is this super bad? I mean, I know it's bad because of the carbs, but is it bad for my healing....

You should follow your surgeons instructions, but it's unlikely that a little mashed potato would do much damage.

You (or your insurance company) just spend $15,000 to have surgery!! You wanna ruin it with mashed potatoes? I would think now would be the easiest to be committed to sticking to your diet.

Like she said I doubt damage, but you REALLY don't wanna risk puking right? That would hurt so bad, and could damage the band placement.

The reason for the liquid diet is to alow your stomach to heal (it has several stiches in it now holding the band in place). Solid foods require your stomach to move and churn; which is bad during the healing phase. If you are hungry I would add an additional Protein Shake if you are allow them (protein helps keep you satisfied longer.)

Ditto to everything everyone said.

We all know how hard the first few days can be physically AND psychologically. Do what you need to and dig up all the self control you can muster right now. You don't want to cause complications. I promise, it will get easier as time goes on.

It's hard to undo years and years worth of wants, desires and compulsions to eat. And when we are told we CAN'T have what we want we might be willing to put ourselves in harms way to get it. Compulsions to eat or satisfy desires can be amazingly powerful. Just watch some of those celebrity rehab shows and you'll see what I'm talking about. Change doesn't come easy for we humans but it will come. We all want you to succeed in this lap band journey that's why we are being so harsh right now. We've all been right where you are and we want you to find the happiness we have found.

At about 4 days in the liquids just weren't holding me for more than a few minutes before I was hungry again. I called my doc and he ok'd thicker Soups & semi-soft foods. Mashed potatoes still don't work well for me and I'm glad because used to love them so much. So hold out as long as you can or give your doc a call and see what foods he'll ok for your health.

Hang in there. You've only just begun and it will get easier as time goes on.

It should be fine I am allowed to have mashed potatoes at a week. I am looking forward to them. I know the carbs are bad but the way I was told the first month is all about healing. You are not going to ruin your band or it wouldn't be ok with my doctor. Don't over indulge and remember to stop when full.

Thanks everyone for the supportive replies and not so much for the one(s) that just seem negative (and I think it's very easy to distinguish between the two). My dr has already okayed me for thick Soups, which is why I figured the mashed potatoes wouldn't be too bad. I only ate very few and ate them very, very slowly. The main reason I ate them was because I had been feeling very dizzy and light headed for two days and thought that maybe if I had something of substance it would help. And it did.

I am a self pay patient and spent my family's life savings so I could get the lapband. I choose not to take any chances and follow my surgeons orders to the letter. I know how hard the liquid diet is (I actually gagged on the broth) but it is only one week and I lost the most weight of all that week; 14 pounds! Good luck to you on your journey.

Thanks! All surgeons are sssooo different on the post op diet and mine requires two weeks of liquids so I'm a week down and still have a week to go. Then I do two weeks of mushies and then I can start attempting regular food. And I also thought chicken broth was NASTY!!! I didn't expect it to be so bad when I tried it. LOL

Sorry, I guess I had two weeks liquid diet, too. The first was just harder because it was Clear Liquids. The second week was full liquids which included real Soups and pudding so I thought I was really getting some great food by that point. Then mushies was great. As a matter of fact, I still finding myself going back to some of the mushies because they were so good.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
