Eating out

Hi everyone. I need some advice. My band is pretty tight right now. I usually eat out about once a week but I stick to a salad or Soup because I don't like getting stuck and having to throw up in public. Well tommorrow me and the hubby are going out for our anniversary and I'd really like to get some better than soup or salad. How hard do you think it will be to eat a steak like a filet tenderloin? Or do you think I should try fish? Well probably go to outback or red lobster. Any suggestions?

HI, I have never been stuck so I don't have a lot of insight in that however, I do know that a nice flaky fish (like haddock) is easy to eat. I have that frequently when I go out.

I haven't yet dared to try a steak but I have really wanted to.....

Jackie

PS Have a great time!!

I am one of the lucky ones that has never had an issue with any foods at all, everything goes down just like it used to before my surgery, other than large pills which I have to snap or cut in half. But as far as the steak goes, I would say if you dont have much of an issue with other solid or more dry meats that you will be fine to just cut it into very small pieces and make sure you chew chew chew until that pieces is turned into mush in your mouth before you swallow. Maybe a bit of steak sauce on your bites would help if you like it?

Steak has never given me much of a problem, but I know it does for many others. Seafood has usually been very easy for me; once in a great while shrimp may give me a problem, but crab and scallops have been easy even when I'm tight. When I want to make sure I don't have a problem for a dinner, I make sure to drink A LOT earlier in the day, so that my band isn't tight from dehydration. I may also have hot tea or coffee, or start with Soup before the meal, to help things loosen up. I don't usually have to go to much trouble, but when I'm tight those things tend to help. :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
