Hello, This May Be A Stupid Question, But I Have Been Wondering If Being Stuck Means That You Ate Too Much or Took Too Big Of A Bite/Didn't Chew Well? If It's Neither Of These Can You Please Help Me Out By Telling Me What "Being Stuck" Really Means. I Hear That It Can Be Very Painful, Thankfully I have Never Experienced Such Thing. I Have Although Experience Fullness To The POint Wr I Felt It On My "Chest" (like tightness), Is That The Feeling Of Being Stuck? It Went Away After A 1/2 Hour Or So.... Any Info. Given WOuld Be Greatly Appreciated.

Thank You!

I believe I have only had two "stuck incidents". Both were with baby carrots. I think I took a bit and did not chew barely at all and swallowed. The food basically gets caught in the funnel (area of stomach constricted by band) and can't fall through to the "large stomach". Since carrots are hard it had a hard time sliding down. Boy oh Boy did that hurt. Felt like I was trying to swallow a shard of glass.

you are lucky!!! Had this 3 years ago....and trust me - you will know if something is stuck!!! The tight feeling you had - that sounds right - specially if it did go down a little later. But the way I experience it is that it is an extremely tight, sometimes really painfull feeling, on pit of stomach. In my case - if it was something not chewed well, or swallowed too big, it WILL come out. It is not supposed to happen - so be careful. Read my blog - and you may understand how it could be, since I am now going through a fase where even my Water go down slowly. SO - it may either go down eventually, or you may vomit. at least it is a little better than reeeaaaal vomit ( is there such a thing?), but it is not good for you. If my band is too tight and has been for a while , i experience back pain as well....Good luck =- seems like you are doing very well

I've had a number of "stuck" episodes. It usually happens when i do exactly what you said, eat too fast or take to big of bites. I don't think eating too much causes it, at least not with me (that's different pain for me!) Apparently it can not get thru the opening in your band and you start "sliming" in order to create enough saliva to get it to slide thru your band. I, however, usually end up throwing up to get rid of it because i litterally fill up with slime, and it has got to come out! It also is very painful. I can't believe the amount of slime i produce. If it can't go down, it's got to come up! I have learned that it really is how you eat more than what you eat. I can pretty much eat anything if the bites are small enough and chewed well enough. You'd think I'd catch on, but it still gets me once i awhile.

My getting stuck is a little different. I called it getting 'lodged'. I don't slime or PB or even throw up. But I can feeling something sitting in my chest area that won't go down. I start wiggling, or moving my arms, and the offending object will painfully go down.

It's usually caused by not chewing enough, or eating something you just can't handle (like bread or Pasta for me).

You can get badly stuck as described above. I try to avoid this at all costs, and so far I have.

When I eat too much it gets a little painful, or I start to burp a lot. I know at that point, I'm done.

I am 5 years out - lost 85 pounds but need to lose about 20 more. OMG, I did not know the reason for sliming was to help something stuck slide thru - I just thought that the saliva had no where to go but out the mouth! Anyway, even after 5 years I still slime (not as often & it's usually my fault). I know there are some gross elements involved wit h the band but it's still the best decision I ever made. I have not had a "fill" for 3 years & I'm still tight enough to limit my intake of food!

Listening to you all describe it, I now realize I have been stuck a few times. I slime really bad when it happens. Usually cause I take big bites and swallow without chewing well. Old habits die hard. I go to my bathroom and spit in the sink and pat my ribs and pace back and forth. Didn't know I could jump up and down, so will try that when/if necessary.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
