I got my surgery date, and I go tomorrow for Pre-Op. Started the pre-op diet today... Not too thrilled with the shakes ( any ideas on how to make them taste a lil better would be greatly appreciated), but everything seems to be going smoothly, and very very quickly! I just started this journey on 12/1/2010, and now I am looking at surgery in just under two weeks. Wow, I guess that goes to show if you leave it in Gods hands, and submit to his will totally, he will handle it and you better be prepared for him to move some mountains! :cool2: :seeya:

That is fast Tori. My date is 12/28 and I started my pre-op shakes yesterday too. I have no advice to make them taste better. I figured it is what it is and its only 2 weeks followed by a couple more post op weeks. I started this process 367 days ago. Insurance company issues made this a long process. I left it in God's hands with the assistance of a couple lawyers and it worked out in the end. With such a long frustrating battle to get the insurance companies denial overturned I believe is helping me find the mental toughness to get through this easier. In fact I was so looking forward to the day I was scheduled to start the pre-op diet as it was finally starting what I fought so hard to get to.

As you drink those shakes think of how little consequence that unpleasant flavor will mean 6 months from now when you are so much healthier. Best of Luck to you.

Congrats on your date Tori! I'm being banded on 12/27 also... :D

As far as the protien shakes go, have you tried mixing in fruit of a small amount of Peanut Butter? I have also heard mixing in flavors of Jello powder. And be sure to try different types of powder as some are MUCH tastier than others. Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
