I've been on my preop diet since last Thursday. Was cooking dinner for my husband tonight which happened to be tacos. It was very hard to handle this. I told him he might have to go back cooking for himself again. But anyways, my question is can you eat a taco shell after surgery? Sure hope so since its hard. Hope this isn't a stupid question since I'm preop. Thank you for your responses.

Yes you can. I eat tacos sometimes. The crunchy ones go down better, but I can eat the soft shelled ones sometimes. I love tacos!

If you get like me after you get banded, food just won't taste the same. It's weird. Good luck on your journey.

We routinely eat "tacos" at our house... generally every other week or so. I put tacos in quotations because we do do them a little differently now. Instead of eating the shells, we buy the baked tortilla scoops (Tostitos) and then put the meat/shredded cheese/taco sauce/lettuce/etc in a bowl, mix it all up, and then spoon it into the scoops. you can take MUCH smaller bites doing it this way, without a mess. :) I don't quite have restriction yet, and trying to be cautious with portion sizes, and I find I eat a lot less, and have fewer carbs, and am still satisfied. laugh.gif

HI there all, I'm new to this site and I was banded in June of 2009. I've been out for about 1 and a 1/2 years and have been as high as #277 lbs in my life at 5'11" (large frame I'm told) Am down as low as 196#, now maintaining at about #200 lbs. I guess I should say that I'm stuck there for like a couple of months. Would like to get to 180# if possible. My problem is like all other weight loss programs I hate the nutritional watch dogging of food and tend to stick with what I call safe foods. You know the foods that don't send me to the restrooms. They might not be the best foods but I've learned what works and what dosen't. I will say that every Tues the wife and I go to our little dive place and you guessed it, it's" Taco Tuesday". Two normal sized tacos for $1.50. I'm addicted to them, lol. Like I said I hate counting calories and such but from dealing with diebettes for like about 8 years ( which it totally gone, yea!) I was shocked when I saw that there were 11 carbs per shell. Well maybe I'll eat the fillings and nibble on the shell from now on. Sorry for the long winded reply I just get so excited talking about]all the positive thing this surgery has done for my life. I think there is a photo of my new hobby instead of eating, restoring old coolers and cars. Dougpost-206977-13813134000746_thumb.jpg

yes I still eat tacos- the crunchy shells are easier to go down. Flour tacos sometimes are a bit rough. Most of the time I make a taco salad and skip the shells.

I love tacos(!!!) and we have them every couple months. Because I try to eat low carb, I allow myself 1 tostada shell (55 cals and 6 carbs) and I'm usually satisfied. But, if I'm still hungry I'll have a small taco salad.

Life without Mexican food just wouldn't be worth living.

I love, love, love tacos, we have them at least a couple times a month!

I'm a bad girl, but for my dinner I fry flour torts in lard! Of course I allot for the calories, and I walk an hour a day.

I don't think I could live if I couldn't eat tacos.

Oh yeah, If I have one for lunch I eat it soft, and I use the small size torts!

OLE' You've made my day. Thank you everyone for all the replies. I'm so glad I will be able to still get my crunch on. Right now I'm on day 6 of my pre op diet. Its been a struggle at times but at this time I can say I haven't cheated. Scheduled for surgery on the 23rd of December. Wish me luck cuz I still don't have approval. I'm sure I will. Could use a prayer though. Thanks again for your replies. ;)

When my surgeon told me chips and salsa go down real well I knew I was going to be just fine. I have made the taco shells with cheese before and thoough they aren't the same it was still amazing! Now that I'm banded I doubt I can eat more than one taco...making tacos this week.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
