What exactly is a Barium Swallow???

You swallow barium while an X-ray machine is on you. The X-ray shows the path of the barium as it goes through your digestive system. It shows if their are any abnormalities in your stomach or esophagus.

I had to have one done after one of my supervised diet visits, at the surgeons office. Everybody scared me by saying how nasty it is, but it didn't bother me. I drank it right down and then drank the Water after it was done. The whole think took about 5 minutes.

I did the barium swallow the day after surgery and it showed my band was too tight and the liquids weren't passing out of my pouch.

My MD accessed my port and withdrew a good amount of air plus 1cc of saline that was in there from the manufacturer.

After that procedure he said I could go home and I said "No way I'm leaving here until we do another barium swallow to make sure it's open now.

He agreed that was a good idea and my second swallow test was right on. They let me watch the procedure on the monitor which gave me a better understanding of how the band works.

Thx,

dave

I was released the same day. Surgery was around 7:30 and I was released a little after 3, with no barium swallow. I had to be drinking Water and I had to pee. I can't imagine those of you who were discharged just a few hours after surgery, I was still sleeping then. I didn't get up until 1 pm.

If i had a barium swallow i don't remember it, so i am fairly sure i didn't have one. I had my surgery at 9.30 am and there was no way i would have been OK to go home the same day,i couldn't keep my eyes open for more than 5 minutes. I struggled home the next morning and was quite anxious as i was nauseated and not tolerating much Fluid. But i am day 4 post op now and doing OK.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
