weight loss on pre-opt diet

Recommended Posts

Did anyone not loose weight on the pre-opt diet? I am getting banded on the 15th and I have not lost one pound. I am following the pre-opt diet but doing something wrong. Dont know what. I hope I will be able to have the procedure done...:(

The purpose of the pre-op diet is to reduce your carb intake, which will shrink the sze of your liver. It needs to be moved during surgery so the band can be put in place. If your liver is too large, it can literally block access to where the band needs to go. So even though you feel like you haven't lost enough weight, you're probably going to be fine. Weightloss can come later.

Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback! I was getting worried about not seeing much weight loss as others, but of'course the purpose to shrink the liver..

Since not all pre-op diets are the same - "Your results can vary." Seriously though, some docs require weeks of liquid diets (mine was 1 week, 20 grams of protein/day.) and some only require the day before. For those on a restrictive diet, a lot of our loss was Water, which I gained back during my 23 hours at the hospital, thanks to the gallon of fluids they pumped into me! (BTW, water weighs 8.333 lbs per gallon.)

I lost 9 pounds, according to the clinic's scale vs my home scale anyways. I know that was mostly Water weight. I think as long you're following the preop diet guidelines that you were given you're on the right track, doing what you're supposed to be. :)

good luck!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
