How will I keep the barium down post op?

Recommended Posts

Today I had my preop upper GI. I kept myself from

Gagging on the barium but just barely. I normally get nauseated after any surgery. How will I keep this down so they can see if the band is correct, etc? Ive had a queasy feeling all day since then. Maybe I'm just over thinking it

If you're nauseated after surgery they should be able to give you something for that. Immediately after surgery I was asked to drink a clear yellow liquid (not the thick barium stuff) but it tasted a lot worse than the barium stuff. Just giving you a heads up. You won't have to drink much, though. Just hold your nose. That helps. You'll be fine.

I also had to drink mine, but since I was an overnighter in the hospital it was the following day. It was the first thing i was allowed to have by mouth and wonderful haha! And contrary to the pre-op chugging of barium, this was just a sip so not bad really...you will be fine!

My clinic put a anti nausia patch behind our ear just before surgery and leaves it there for 3 days. I'm greatful for this because the anasti(I cannot spell that word you all know what I mean LOL) makes me really nausous. There may be something they can give you post op to help with that.

When I had my barium post op I didn't need to drink as much. They handed me a bottle that maybe had 2-3 teaspoons of barium in it. My preop I had to drink a cup full - so gross, I was nauseated most of the day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
