Why is there a string hanging from my belly?

Recommended Posts

When I had my surgery, there was a string hanging from either end of my port. The surgeon cut it off when I went back and I forgot to ask what it was for. Now, I am almost 3 weeks post-op and there is a small scab on my port incision. My husband and I looked at it and there is a string attached. The string runs from the scab into the incision. What we can see is about 1/4 inch long. I have no idea how far it goes under my skin. I am afraid to pull on it in fear that it will bleed. Did anyone else have this issue?

Does it look and feel like a fishing wire? I had something similar. It was a stitch left in from the surgery.

You don't want to pull at it.

It will disolve and disappear with time.

If it is still bothering you next time you see your doctor ask him about it.

I didn't have a string but I did have a piece of nylon almost 1/2 inch long that stuck out of my port incision. I did not notice it until after my 1 week post-op visit. When I went back to the doctor 2 weeks later I showed him and he snipped it off. He said it was a stitch that had worked its way out and nothing to worry about. I tried to pull it out myself then stopped because I thought it might be some type of port marker. My doctor just laughed when I told him that. It may have been stitch remnants like mine was. I am sure if it was problematic your Dr. would have said something. As far as the scabbing, I had a couple scab spots until almost 5 weeks post op.

Thank you both for the feedback. I do believe it is a stitch. So, I plan to leave it alone until I go back to the doctor in a couple of weeks.

If it is bothering you by sticking out or whatever just trim it, i had a sting out of most of my incisions and just trimmed them down with cuticle scissors that i sterilized...cuz im a freak like that lol the stitch sticking out is no biggie, just done pull at it!

I had one of those. I just snipped it with a pair of clippers...and then watched to see if my butt fell off. Sorry...old joke from my childhood.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
