Insurance

Recommended Posts

Right now I am covered under my husbands Cigna insurance. I have to do the 6 months with the nutritionist. :( My surgery date asof now is May 11, 2011.

My job has open enrollment in January for some kind of Horizon BCBS insurance. If I take this insurance I will have 2 insurances.

How would this affect me getting approved? Would they just go by the primary insurance? If they didn't cover the whole thing would the secondary pick it up?

Just wondering if it is worth taking Horizon BCBS. I'm thinking I could get approved sooner.

Is the new one a PPO? I just signed up for a PPO and immediately was approved. If it's an HMO probably have the same 6 month deal. They REALLY don't wanna pay for it, I assume, and most people won't make it through 6 months of diet.

Can't you cancel you on your husbands plan?

Hi Kristen! I also have Cigna and had to do the 6 months of diet and nutrition classes. At first I was so bummed about it but now that I have one month left I'm almost greatful for that time to prepare, research and fully understand what this process entails. Surprisingly the time has flown by! As for having secondary insurance I'm not too sure how that works but I'm sure your surgeons office handles questions like this all the time. You should give them a call and see what information they can provide for you. You may also want to call BCBS to find out what their requirements are before signing up. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Often the plan brochures will discuss co-insurances and how it all works. You can usually find them online.

Not sure it would speed up the process. Generally one insurance will be primary, I believe that one would dictate the speed of approval. I could be wrong, though.

Your knowledge can help other members once you get it figured out! rolleyes.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
