Chest Pain after surgery

Recommended Posts

I went in for revision yesterday, and they kept me over night because I had a huge hiatal hernia, and they were scared of a pneunothorax...I stayed and everything was ok during the night..But I have the horrible gas pain, and trying to walk it out. Has anyone had chest pain after surgery due to the gas? I am 24, and healthy but I have a million thoughts goin on in my head! Help... lol

I think most people have gas pains after surgery. I know mine lasted almost a week.

I'm 26 healthy and had a bad recovery. i had to be admitted two weeks after surgery at my checkup appointment too. my oxygen level was 85 too low for them to let me leave. i even went to er room 1 week after surgery b/c of upper chest pains so bad everyone thought i was having a heart attack. they feared i had blood clot. everything was ok however i hadnt been breathing properly b.c it hurt. so my left lung wasn;t getn proper air. my primary doctor informed me it was some sort of spasms which feel like a heart attack. He syas its rare but can happen b.c my body didnt like having this forein object inside of me.well it took me till 5 weeks after surgery to feel better. goodluck.

I had really bad gas pains for the first few days. A heating pad really helped to relieve some of the discomfort.

A lot of people have posted that their gas pains settle in their shoulders but mine has been hanging out in my chest (around my diaphragm) since the day after surgery. There have been some times where I feel like I need to burp but it is just too painful to actually do it. I have been trying to walk a lot to help get it out and it does eventually come...that said, if you are having shortness of breath along with your chest pains or if you don't get relief from walking and/or taking pain meds then you might want to let your doctor know. I know it's scary whenever you feel chest pains of any sort - at least I know it freaks me out - but don't hesitate to call your doctor if you need reassurance...that's what they are there for and I'm sure they are used to it.

Good luck!

My coordinator had told me that when I woke up from surgery I would feel as though someone was sitting on my chest. It was not quite that bad, but it was close. I had quite a bit of gas that seemed to be in my chest, and it really hurt.

Try to walk as much as you can, moving around really seemed to help.

As others have said, be sure to call your doctor if anything gets worse or changes. Better to call than to not call when you needed to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
