Protein Shakes / Dairy Pre-Op diet

Recommended Posts

So, I'm on my pre-op diet for 7 days, this is day 2, my little booklet say no milk products or solids, which makes sense, but I have to have 3-4 Protein shakes a day, and Clear liquids.. don't all the Protein Shakes have some kind of milk product or milk Protein? I'm not mixing them with milk, just Water. It does say I can have whey Isolate protein or Soy Protein Shakes.

But, whey is milk protein isn't it?

Just curious if anyone had insight on this...

Seems silly but I can't seem to find an answer

I would think that the rule to no milk products would mean that you shouldn't mix your Protein shakes with milk and avoid the use of yogurts and powdered milk when making a Protein drink/smoothie.

You are right though, whey is dairy. So, to be on the safe side, I'd certainly call and check with your surgeon. But I'd bet that if your surgeon has recommended whey protein powders to you, the statement of avoiding dairy applies to what you're adding to your Protein drinks.

Ok, yea I haven't been, I'm pretty sure that's what they meant too. The nurse I deal with is a little.. uh... dingy. I did ask when I was there the other day, I hadn't realized that they all have milk in em anyways. But yea I'm sure this is fine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
