Help! Why no Ibuprofin?

Recommended Posts

I know I was told that Tylenol is now my drug of choice post-op.... but I don't remember the reason why. I am having the worst headache/pms and the Tylenol isn't cutting it. I want an Advil so bad. What would happen if I took an Advil?

I take Advil all the time. Tylenol won't touch my headaches and I'd rather my band explode than suffer the way I do when I get a migraine!

Advil believe it or not, gives me horrible heartburn... I guess each person is different.. try it once and see how you react to it =)

Some doctors think that the use of NSAIDS (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs.. which includes Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Bufferin, etc.) can lead to band erosion. Other bariatric surgeons don't subscribe to that belief.

You need to call your doctor's office and talk to them rather than take advice from people on LBT.

My surgeon will allow occasional use of an NSAID, but at a low, almost useless dose and I also have to take a Prevacid or Prilosec with it.

Sorry about your headache. Hope you feel better soon. Call your surgeon.

One reason that I've heard is that NSAIDS can cause ulcers when they sit in the upper pouch. Sometimes the tylenol doesn't cut it for me and I take a double dose of Jr. strength ibuprophen or disolve Aleve in a teaspoon of warm Water (burns going down). I don't use it often, but sometimes it's the only way to kick the pain. Of course check with your surgeon to see what his/her thoughts are.

My surgeon had me take them two weeks after surgery for inflammation of my ribs. I had to crush them and let me tell you they taste bad! No matter what I put them in they taste bitter. Call your surgeon and ask if you can take them. I would never take anything without asking first.

Supposedly ibuprofen/NSAIDS are irritating to the stomach and can lead to a possible band erosion. That being said, to minimize the change of irritation, I take 4 junior strength chewable ibuprofen when I get a headache with plenty of Fluid to "wash" it past the band. CVS, Walgreen's and probably many other drugstore chains have their own junior chewable ibuprofen that is cheaper than Motrin and just as effective. I haven't found it at Walmart (they only carry the liquid form in my area). So, try the area drugstores for the chewables. As long as you don't take it on a daily basis and only when needed, you should be fine. Run it by your doctor just to be safe so he's on board with it.

If you are fresh out of surgery, avoid taking nsaids. They can increase bleeding. If you've healed from surgery, taking some once in a while won't be too bad, but do not take them daily. As others have mentioned, taking liquid or chewable is better. Follow with liquid to wash it down.

if your pain is consistent and you need to take meds daily, ask for something stronger, like tylenol with codeine, vicodin, tramadol, etc. Just be careful as those can be addictive.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
