Not sure if I can do 'pur?ed foods'

Hi

I was banded on Nov 24 2010 and will be approaching the purèed food stage of the post-op diet. My concern is I don't know if I can stomach blending my food. The thought makes me nauseas! I have to admit, at this point I'm so hungry that I'm not ruling out anything but I was hoping for some ideas as to what else I could eat during that stage that didn't require me to blend my food. I'm open to anything! Thanks for your help :)

You could try oatmeal, cream of wheat, creamy Soups (lite version though), mashed potatoes, squash. Those kinds of things can be eaten without blending them. Good luck. I could have almost eaten dog food after my pre and postop liquid diet. :o

It is amazing how you can really enjoy foods you would'nt have eaten presurgery! During the "mushie" stage I made egg whites and added 1/8 cup of cottage cheese at the end. I used to hate cottage cheese. It made the egg whites sooo cheesey and yummy. I can't express how wonderful it tasted.

Depending on your doctor you may be able to have suger free applesauce (I know it's fruit but if you at like 400 cal a day you have to live sometime). My doctor preferred sweet potatoes to white; I sprinkled it with cinnamon and splendra. Can you have canned tuna/chicken? Non fat laughing cow cheese is much better with tuna/chicken than mayo.< /p>

You can do it!

It's easier than you think.

I was taking my regular for and throwing it in the blender or food processor. It all tastes the same. The pork chops were the only thing that I didn't care for.

LOL! thanks Sue! I have to say my dogs are looking delicious, too!! JK! LOL! I'm sure looking forward to mashed potatoes, just 6 more days to go!

Thanks so much Honk! That all sounds pretty yummy! I wouldn't have thought about putting cottage cheese with my eggs but I can't wait to give it a try! What great ideas, thank you. :)

I went from Clear liquids to a full liquid diet for a week. Full liquid includes scrambled eggs (tread lightly, eggs can be a problem for bandsters), mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, oat meal, cottage cheese,, apple sauce, yogurt, strained creamy Soups and some other things I have probably forgotten. Do a search of full liquid diet. I was surprised to see everything that was on it.

Others have done baby food...I could not go there! blah!

Cottage cheese!!! I couldn't do the blended food thing. Cottage cheese was my main source of protien! Good Luck!

I sorta skipped the pureed stage cuz it was nasty to me also. I stuck to mushy things or foods I could mash with a fork. I diced meats up so very tiny. I used Laughing Cow in my scrambled egg to keep it soft and creamy. I put Pure Protein Powder in my yogurt twice a day. I have till Saturday then I am on reg foods. I can barely get to 1000cals daily. I just take my vits and get my Protein. I think it may still be swelling. I can only eat about 1/4cup dense food or less. I drink a few cups of milk a day, that helps with cals and protein.

You really don't have to puree your food for the mushy stage, as there are a lot of foods that are pretty darn close to that already.

The only thing that I'd watch out for with a lot of the recommendations here is that foods like oatmeal, mashed potatoes, creamy Soups, etc. are not going to help you lose during this period. If you're not shooting to lose weight until after you're back on full solids, then disregard. :)

I ate a lot of bean Soups, made low-fat and without cream. Fat-free refried Beans, split pea or red Beans made with a touch of liquid smoke and a well-cleaned ham bone for flavor. Chana masala, daal. Etc. If the beans didn't cook down on their own like the split peas or lentils, then I would toss the Soup in the blender. All high in Protein and Fiber. :)

Fat-free ricotta cheese, seasoned with italian seasoning, topped with marinara sauce and baked.

Like others said, cottage cheese and greek yogurts were favorites too, also high in Protein and no blending required.

I also stuck with at least 1 shake per day in that period too to make sure I kept up my protein intake. It went by before I knew it and neither pureeds or mushies was that big of a deal. :) I still use the recipes on days when my band feels tight, any day after a bad stuck episode, or for the day after I get a fill!

I didn't purée my foods. I don't eat red met pork or poultry and the thought of eating pureed fish is so disgusting to me I wouldn't be able to eat it no matter how hungry I was feeling.

During that stage I ate a lot of soft tofu. Soft tofu with sauces, soft tofu Soup and stew...you can put it in anything. It's super healthy, packed with Protein and a great mushy food. Tofu is a great food all around and a good substitute for meat anytime (not just during mushies). :)

I'm in the mushie/puree stage as well. One thing I've been loving.. is the vegetarian (low fat) refried Beans mixed in some salsa, a little shredded cheese then bake in the oven. I take greek yogurt (plain) add in the powder mix of ranch to make a lil sour cream ranch taste and top off the Beans. LOVE IT!

I was so tired of the liquid phase, not because of the foods but I was tired of just 'drinking' everything :D

Thanks! I've had tofu once or twice before but have never cooked with it. This will be a perfect time to try it! Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the great advice CurvyCat! I was so looking forward to the mashed potatos etc that I totally forgot I still have to watch what I eat! I'll make sure I'm more aware during this stage.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
