I had insurance though i wouldn't say it was next to nothing. I think i paid close to $1000 by time i did my consults, pre-op tests, copay for surgury, co pay to the hospital, etc.

Near nothing here - our public health system covers most of it, private health insurance allows you to choose your doctor, your hospital and not have to wait, the insurance pays all the hospital costs, the public health system pays all medical costs.

I had a once off $A3,000 out of pocket payment to my surgeon which covers fills and aftercare forever, as well as any revision surgery if necessary.

My banding cost was $15,000 which wasnt covered by isurance. I'm hoping the pre-op testing was covered by my insurance but I had to pay more than $1,500 upfront in co-pay for the tests. If the insurance company turns me down for pre-op testing coverage, I'll have to ante up another $4,000+. I'll be paying this off for years and years but it's worth every penny.

Jacqui, where are you from?? Canada? or Australia? I wish we had community health, I know most Americans do not like it but I grew up in the military and that is what we had so I'm used to it and you actually get excellent care because the Dr. is just there to make sure you are healthy!! He is not there to get rich and buy his weekend home off of your need or non need for extra tests

can you tell i'm a little jaded here guys??

Good topic for a pool though interesting results.. What I want to know is if the people who went to places like Sweeden are including air and hotel fees in their total...

I paid $16,500 for the surgery. But, I also got stuck for $2700 for the cardiac stress test. My primary care physician used the words bariatric surgery and my insurance denied the claim--TWICE! So, all together--about $20,000. But, I have lost 46 pounds since Aug. 29th. Without the surgery, I would have just gained more weight.

At first the out of pocket was $8.ooo.oo and I am waiting for insurance to reemburse me. I had pre approval but my clinic wanted thier cut up front. I could not have done this without insurance as I know my clinic charges $19.5000 now, but when I first started investigating thier charge was $17.500. This pays the Hospital, anesthesia, surgeon, and 1 full year of follow-up appt including all fills and unfills. I think that this is very comprehensive as I also had the pre op phyc eval, nutrition eval, and Surgeon eval wrapped up in this charge. I had to pay my co-op charges for Cardioligist, sleep study (found to have apnea and needed c-pap), and primary care approval. My cardiologist needed bloodwork and nuclear scan of my heart to clear me for the band. He was extreamly happy that I chose this option, he wouldn't clear me for a bypas or rny surgery.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
