getting banded with a lower starting BMI

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had the lap band with a BMI of only 28.5? I'm 43, I also have several comorbidities, hypertension for the past 16 years, since I was 27, severe GERD, lost and regained the same 10-30+ pounds over the last 10 + years, and am sick of the rollercoaster. Tried every diet/RX out there without success. I am self pay, just looking for an MD (good one) willing to band someone like me. I want to lose 45 # and get back to the weight I was when I married, and be able to keep up with my 2 year old twins, ironically I have lost all the preg weight, but was overweight when I got pregnant. I don't want to have to gain 10 or 20# to get the band. Not that I have'nt been there at least 2-3 times in the last decade, but it doesn't make sense to gain weight with my blood pressure in order to qualify. HELP ANYONE. Thanks a million.

I'm not sure you will find a good surgeon with morals who will do WLS on someone with such a low BMI. A BMI of 25 is normal weight and you are not that far off. I do understand the feeling of obesity even when you don't fall into that weight range.

When I was trying to find someone to do mine, when I called the office I asked "Will your Dr do the surgery off label?" Some said no and others say it depends on the person. Your just going to have to call your local Dr's and go from there. My Dr was Dr David Kim in Colleyville TX (Dallas suburb) if you want to travel, he looks at the person not just the numbers.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
