Pain around port, Any thoughts

Recommended Posts

For the last two days I have been experiencing pain when I move a certian way. It all started Yesterday morning as I bent over to pick up a sock. I felt a sharp pain directly beside my port area. The pain happens when I move a certian way and it has gotten more severe today. I can feel a slight stinging most of the time but that pain is not bad.

I have no redness in the area and my incisions have mostly healed My sense is that this is the tube is rubbing against my stomach wall causing some irritation and when I move a certain way it jabs into the sensitive spot.

If anyone has had a similar experience could you please let me know if I should be concerned and go to the Doctors (It's Christmas day) or should I wait it out and let my body heal itself.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Is this an aching feeling when you twist or turn?

I had port sensitivity and aching for about 2 months after surgery. It helped to lean into a pillow and a heating pad.

Otherwise, I would say give your doc a ring.

Princess, the pain is more of a sting and you are correct it occurs when I twist or turn. I am going to wait a couple of days and if it has not improved I will go see the Doc.

Thanks for the reply

Cheers

Call doc. Go see doc. Call doc. Go see doc! Remember, you've got stitches in you giblets. Maybe you pulled one? And port infections can lead to erosion, and even though you probably don't have an infection, your body is talking to you. It's telling you to advise doc that something isn't right. :)

Hey TommyO!

That is Exactly what I had starting at day 3! I called the doc...he was in surgery all day so he called in a round of antibiotics (just in case). I saw him for my 1 week check and he did an upper GI to check things out. Everything was fine, he said, so he sent me on my way, stinging/burning and all.

I think you are absolutely correct in assuming it is your tubing irritating your insides (that's what I thought too - kinda like an interior friction burn, right?) I can tell you now that mine is for the most part gone...I just get a twinge when I move wrong (dropping soap in the shower, stretching to grab the good plates from the top shelf, bending and stretching to pick up those toys waaayyy over there, etc.)

Just to be on the safe side, I would give a call to your doctor. Since yours just started it may be that you have pulled a stitch or something. Best to let a professional check it out (are your follow-up visits free??? hope so!!)

Let me know what he says!!

Okay, I think if I read between the lines DeLarla you think I should go see my Doctor. At least I think thats you are saying :)

Cheri, I'm in Canada so everyting but the surgery is paid for. It's interesting but our universal health care here doesn't cover the surgery but it looks after anything that happens after. Even more interseting our health care will cover Gastric Bypass but not the band. Mind you it's about a 3-5 year wait for bypass surgery.

My Family doc is away until the 28th and my Surgeon is away until the 5th so I plan to see my Family Doc on the 28th and take it from there. My only other option is to go to emergency and that will take a few hours and they won't be able to do much anyway.

I think that is a good plan unless one of you thinks otherwise.

Thanks for the feedback
