Do you chew gum???

Recommended Posts

Okay, I love to chew gum but my surgeon forbids it! EVER! He says if you swallow it, it would take a surgical procedure to remove it. What I'm thinking is, when is the last time I swallowed my gum?? I was like 10 years old. But still, I am afraid of the potential harm and haven't yet. Do you chew??

My surgeon forbids it as well. I haven't had a piece since pre-op. Getting stuck on food is sometimes unavoidable, because I have to eat. I can avoid the risk of getting gum stuck.

My surgeon says you might not have ever swallowed your gum, but as soon as you are banded, you will blink.gif. I don't want to be scoped to remove something I was told not to have. Not to mention the pain of being stuck while waiting to get scoped at the ER if it is after hours for your surgeon. I doubt stomach issues would be top priority.

Add to all that, my jaw cracks and snaps all the time, I prefer to not chew it.

I chew gum. sugar-free versions. I've not swallowed my gum since I was a child and don't plan to start. Been banded 21 months.. still haven't swallowed gum. I'll take the risk because gum satisfies my desire to chew without adding calories. YMMV.

I chew gum a LOT. I have a real sweet tooth. I guess I must have some kind of oral fixation because I just like to taste and have something to chew on. Because I chew it so much, (always Extra sugar free gum) sometimes my jaw gets sore, so I bought some cinnamon toothpicks that help quell the cravings as well. My surgeon has not said anything about gum at all and I've had no trouble at all. I'll admit, I've swallowed my gum as an adult - times like walking into the board room, realizing I'm chomping on gum and don't have any place to discreetly toss it, but I've not done it since being banded. I love my gum!

I was banded on the 11th of november. I have been chewing gum for probably the last two weeks. For some reason, gum keeps me going. I dont want to start eating everything in sight ( which I might do or not do). But I know gum gives me a satisfication that is really weird. I feel like I'm eating when it must be a chewing thing. I guess I just need to have my mouth moving to feel satisfied. It's proably in my head. But hell if it works, I'm down for trying.

Also my surgeon never said I couldn't chew gum so I guess I never considered it a problem. but when I go back on the 15th of december I will sure ask him.

I chew gum (like right now). I will have to ask my doc how he feels about this. However I don't think he would object considering once I was in his office and he had offered me gum one time lol

If I didn't chew gum I would probably munch on anything in sight. My doctor never said anything about gum but I can see why it would be a major problem if you swallowed it. :o

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
