Help!! Cant find low carb mushy foods

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, my surgery date is 12/22/10 and im trying to prepare myself for the post op diet. My nutritionist said I have to make sure that any food I eat must be under 5 grams of fat and 5 grams of carbs. However for the first month I can only eat mushy foods such as yogurts, cottage cheese, pudding etc... I went to the supermarkets and cannot find anything under 5 grams of carbs...if you guys know of anything pleaseeee let me know...Im getting desperate here :)

thanks

I wish I could help you but the more I think about it the more I have found that to stay under 5 grams of carbs per meal is impossible....I didn't have those kind of restrictions with my diet...Good Luck

Seems like every Dr has their own protocol. I was banded on 11/16/10 and I am currently on mushies. I have been eating low fat small curd cottage cheese, fat free yogurt, instant mash potatoes, Soup, eggs….plus Protein shakes and I have been feeling great and losing weight! Maybe check with the nutritionist and ask for specific examples of products >5 carbs. My nutritionist never mentioned that restriction. I was just told to keep I low fat/low cal, make sure sugar is listed as one of the first 3 ingredients on the nutrition label and the other standard list of “no-no’s”

Good luck with your surgery!!

I am a diet controlled diabetic (no meds), so it was rough for me during mushies only. Here is my favorite recipe for low carb, kick-ass pumpkin Soup.< /p>

The only ways I tweak the recipe are:

1) I found fat free half & half made by Land O Lakes and it works well.

2) I add pumpkin Spice Mix to it. A lot of the same spices, but I tend to like more of them than the recipe calls for.

3) I like sicy foods, so I add quite a bit more cayenne pepper than the recipe calls for.

Congrats and good luck!

Definitely try to make an appointment with a dietician. They can provide very useful information. I love my NUT. She gave me her email and I ask questions whenever I need to. I see her 6 times a year, my BCBSofNC lets me do that with no copay. You can tell her/him your dr's specific directions and she can advise you how to make them work for you. IMO, establishing a relationship with a good NUT that focuses on WLS is one of the most important aspects of post-op success.

I know every doc is different but 5 grams is hard. My doc told me 5 grams fat and 15 grams carb, which is a lot easier to find than 5. I am a slow loser but I have lost over 25 pounds in 11 weeks by going by the 15 grams. Good Luck to you and hope you find your answer.

Kroger has carbmaster yogurt that is 12 grams of Protein and 3 net carbs. Also try crabcakes-maybe making your own with less bread and more crab meat. sugar-free pudding is less than 5 grams of carbs,

I don't know if crabcakes are really a mushy food but the recipe for breadcrumbless-crabcakes on BariatricEating are fantastic. We eat them usually once a week. Here it is: http://www.bariatriceating.com/BEhealthnutrition/recipes/crabcakes.php

I use light mayo, egg substitute, add red pepper, and if I use the butter, I use light butter and put 1/8 tablespoon on each before I bake them (just divide your butter into 8 equal portions and then dot each portion on top of each crabcake).

Buy a food chopper/processor. ($15.00 at Wal-mart). I was banded 2 weeks ago and am on soft/mushy. The main thing I have been eating is blended up tuna fish. If you add some Pickle Juice to it, it gets moist. I also put a little bit of fat-free mayo. It's soft and mushy and 21 grams of Protein. With the food chopper, you can blend up practically anything and it tastes the same. Just a different texture. I even blended some turkey with a little gravy for Thanksgiving.

:D

YES! food processor is KEY!

Here is one more idea for you. Quick, easy, totally satisfies my sweet-tooth too ... it is another pumpkin recipe, but a much quicker to prepare one.

I take 1/3 of the can of pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling), add the Pumpkin Pie Spice to it (it has cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg ...) and some Splenda to taste (I like the Splenda for baking that measures like sugar). It seriously tastes just like pumpkin pie without the crust and is about 50 calories.

Hummus! It's just garbanzo Beans, lemon juice, garlic and a little olive oil and salt. Yum....

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.

I'm so sorry. I lost my pup (Mr. Bitters - a chocolate Pomeranian) 2 years ago and it still makes me tear up. He was my everything - my constant companion. I understand. Do the best you can to get back on track.
