How along after surgery are you able to drink Alcohol again?

I'd ask your doctor this question, but off hand, I'd suggest waiting until you are at least on full solids before doing so. You want to be healed up before adding alcohol to the mix.

I waited a month before I had any alcohol.

I think the issue is the "empty calories". Also a few drinks can lower your inhibitions and you may eat something you normally wouldn't. Personally, I stay away from it.

What about alcohol during pre op diet? I know the big issue would be the sugars in the drinks but my big 30th birthday party is about 9 days before surgery. I am skipping Christmas dinner (2 days before) and not having cake on my birthday (13 days before) but I figured a drink or two as long as it's not beer (carbs) or some super sugary drink may be okay...? Just need some opinions...

The problem with alcohol is empty calories. I think my doctor had told me to wait up to a month but still doesn't recommend it.

As far as you Swan56, I would ask your doctor. That could be a problem with pre op, or maybe not. I really don't see how it would be a problem pre op unless you drink a lot and it was like a day before your party. Remember you need to try and heal your liver and reduce the fat in it, if you don't they can cancel your surgery. As long as you are doing well with the pre op weight loss otherwise, then I don't know how it would be a huge problem. Again, I already said that. LOL

I waited almost 2 months. We had gone on a cruise and I had a few drinks during that week. Since then I really haven't had any except for an occasional glass of wine. I don't want the extra calories and most of the time I find that I start feeling to "full" when I do have that glass of wine & end up not eating properly then am hungry later in the evening.

I had a small drink the other night at a Christmas party, and am only a little over 2 weeks post-op. I am not a big drinker so only had the one small drink. Didn't seem to affect me much thankfully. Won't be drinking again tho for a couple of months. Wanted to ask, can we drink a beer now and then after we are on full solids?

Be careful though. I've lost over 100 lbs and I went out with my sister and brother in law for some Mexican food. I had 2 pina coladas and that was enough to make me wobbly. I was almost 300 lbs prior to surgery and alcohol did little to me then. I had to be reminded that it will definitely affect me now! LOL!

A big margarita has 700 calories, a Pina Colada 644 ... just a FYI ahah, not worth the calories!!

and if you aren't eating the same time as you are drinking won't you be the cheapest drunk ever?

Haha, I never liked alcohol much, I guess I'm weird. But that is almost an entire days worth of calories... that's nuts!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
