Surgery date Dec. 16 and Tricare approval

Recommended Posts

I met with my surgeon again on Wednesday. She was very happy with my psych eval, and my appt with the nutritionist. I've lost 6 pounds since my appointment with the nutritionist. Anyway, she said she would now submit my paperwork for approval to Tricare. My BMI at my first appt was 41. Now with my weight loss it's 39/40 ish. I think she's submitting the 41 BMI weight. I have no co morbilities. She said I should have no problem getting approval because my BMI is 40. Anyone else share their experience with Tricare? My surgery date is set (tentative) for December 16.

Tricare is one of the easiest insurance carriers to get an approval from. I went through what you did, and they submitted my surgery request to Tricare on Friday, October 15th. On Wednesday the 20th I got a call from the Tricare office, did a brief phone interview, ("Sir, is this surgery truly what you want?" "Um, yes. That's what I've been working toward all these months." "Oh, ok. We just need to be sure."), and they approved me on the spot. Took three working days after submission to have my approval. And now my surgery is a week from Monday. Can't wait!

You'll likely be approved. I haven't heard of anyone being turned down once their Provider requests an approval for surgery. i think they know the surgeon wouldn't request it unless there was a need, and that you fit the requirements.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
