PCOS pregnancy success story.

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to drop in and share my story.

After being told that we would never conceive naturally due to my PCOS and weight issues I decided to have lapband surgery in January of 2009 in a last ditch attempt to lose weight and hopefully either get pregnant naturally or help our chances of IVF.

I managed to lose around 20 kilos (44 pounds approx) in just over a year and was so in love with my band. I had and ultrasound done on my ovaries in the November of 2009 which revealed that due to the weight loss I no longer had cysts on my ovaries. My cycle also returned to every 33 days. Before the band I would only get around 2-3 a year.

We managed to conceive naturally in April of this year and I am now 31 weeks pregnant. Without the band helping me to lose weight I don't think this would have happened.

To those of you out there struggling to conceive, please don't give up! I have another friend who was banded after seeing my success with weight loss (they had been trying for over 2 years to get pregnant). She is now also pregnant and due in May of 2011.

I am now looking forward to meeting my little one and will be back on the weight loss wagon again the birth.

Bella

Thank you for your story. My husband and I had tried for two years to get pregnant. I was told, by five different doctors, these things: I was making it up (only having a preiod every 90-100 days), I was "too fat" to have kids, I needed to get off my fat @$$, put down the bonbons, and go to the gym (despite having 18 months of food journals showing I was following weight watchers strictly), I may or may not be diabetic (after doing some tests...and they weren't going to test me anymore, and the final one saying "You probably DO have a fertility problem, but we have so many women already pregnant we're not going to help you. After these two years, we were stationed back in the US (we were in England, and only dealt with military doctors). Within 6 weeks of being here, I got an appointment with one of the best fertility doctors in the state. I went in and she told me I had PCOS...and that I was already 5.5 weeks pregnant.

I had mylapband in March, and am waiting until this coming some to start TTC. It gives me hope to know that you've had PCOS and have been able to convceive quickly after lapband. I have no idea if my cycles are normal or not- I have a Mirena put it.

Again, thanks for sharing your story and good luck with your little one!!

Bella,

Thank you so much for sharing your story!!! I have lost around 45-50 pounds. And I have had PCOS since I was 14 (I'm now 22). My husband and I have only been trying to conceive for 2 months. We actually just tried using Pre-Seed to see if it would help. Your story gives me so much hope!!! Congrats!!!!!!!

The top factor driving me to get the lap band in March is the hope that I will be able to conceive in the future. We've been ttc for over four years now. When surgery to remove my ovarian cysts didn't help us conceive, I knew I had to lose the weight. It's my last resort before attempting IVF. I'm planning on getting the lap band this upcoming March and hope it all goes well. Thanks for sharing your story that gives me renewed hope. :)

My story is a little different, but yet similar in that I too have PCOS and I had the Lap Band done. My surgery was on October 26, 2009 and I have lost 75 lbs. so far (currently at 185). My whole reason for getting the surgery was to lose the weight so that I could have children. My husband and I only waited 6 months before we started trying and unfortunately we were not successful on our own. We tried for 6 months before seeing my OBGYN. She put me on Clomid, a fertility medicine to try to get me to ovulate, since I wasn't doing that on my own, due to the PCOS. And we all know that without ovulation, pregnancy is impossible! So, we tried the medicine for 2 months with no luck, so my OBGYN sent me to a fertility specialist. We waited a month before going, so this brings us to our 10th month of TTC. The Dr. had us take a whole bunch of tests and take a different medication that was also supposed to help with ovulation. This time the medication worked and I not only ovulated for the first time, but also conceived! I just found out 3 days ago that I'm pregnant! I know that I still needed the help of the medication to make this work, but I whole heartedly believe that it would have been near impossible without the surgery. There have been times that I've thought to myself that the surgery was a waist since it wasn't helping me to get pregnant at all, let alone with the medication, but when I look back on it, I never should have started trying so early after my surgery. I hadn't lost all the weight that I should have, and if I would have waited longer, it's possible that my ovulation could have come back on it's own. Either way, I'm still so very blessed to even say that I'm going to have a baby when it seemed so far away and almost impossible to achieve, Praise God! :)

Hello all!

These stories are very awesome to hear! I am in the process of getting lap band now (just had my psych eval, doc's office is turning it into ins next week!) and its partially to hopefully jump start my ovaries so my DH and I can get pg.

I haven't had a period in over a year and a half but I have no cysts on my ovaries! I don't know if I have PCOS or I have been told it could possibly be a type of endometriosis. I couldn't afford the exploratory surgery to check my ovaries up close so I decided now that I have insurance again I would just try to lose weight and see if that helped (losing weight in general is good for you anyway).

Anyway! I love hearing other people's success stories..makes me feel like I'm not alone :)

Erin

These stories give me some great hope! I had my daughter at 15 which kick started all my problems. I now have PCOS but am severely over weight! Weighing about 285 at 5'4. I get banded on February 11th, 2011! I am hoping to be able to get pregnant about 9 months to a year out after being banded!

These were amazing stories that truly inspired me...we have been trying to conceive for about 7 years...I have irregular periods....my periods stay on for 2 long...my Dr had me get on birth control and ordered me to lose weight in order to regulate my period. This worked for awhile but recently my period is out of wack again... I am praying for the same out come once I get the lap band! Thank you all for these encouraging stories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
