Confused about reason for fills

Recommended Posts

I have had 1 fill of 3cc and dont feel any restriction.

I have been able to limit myself to 800-1000 can/day without much problem.

If I am not hungry, what good will restriction do? Once you get restriction you are not able to eat as much per meal. Doesnt this make it more difficult to get all of the nutrients in?

If you are not hungry between meals and getting all your nutrients, you may not need a fill at this time, but check with your dr office.

Since you are not hungry and able to limit your calories without much probem, sounds to me like you do indeed have restricition. Don't fix what's not broken. Best wishes.

I think you may have restriction at 3 ccs. One thing to consider is that as you loose weight you might loose around your stomach this could affect the fit of the band around your stomach. At that point you might need more fill (so the band will be tighter) to feel restriction. Remember the band is not around metal or plastic but living/swelling/contracting human tissue.

I think you are confusing what "restriction " is. If you are able to eat small/er meals of healthy foods , be satisfied for a number of hours and you are not hungry then you have restriction.

Restriction is not about not being able to eat certain foods.

You may find that over time you start eating bigger portions or getting hungry sooner. This happens because the band loosens over time. That is when you would need another fill.

I really don't like the term restriction.

I much prefer to express what the band does as "appetite suppression".

That is what is supposed to happen, you are able to eat a small meal (my doctor suggests 3oz of a Protein, 1/2 cup low carb veggies.. other docs may have other guidelines) and remain satisfied, not full.. there's a difference.. for a minimum of 3 hours, preferably 4 or more.

Sounds like you are in a good place for you for now. Way to go!

If you're not hungry, then you *do* have restriction. My surgeon explained that they used to think the band worked by restricting how much you could eat. Now they understand that it is because it puts pressure on the vagus (?) nerves. When pressure is put on the nerves, it keeps your stomach from producing a hormone called ghelin which basically makes you want to eat. Your band is apparently working if you aren't hungry.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
