Soon to be banded. 11/23 AAAHHHHHH Nerves

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am a newbie getting banded 11/23/10. YUP... 2 days before Thanksgiving. I was originally set for 12/30 but moved it up. I would rather lose weight this holiday season than to put more on. I am a huge ball of emotions right now. Not sure what to do with it all. I am paying out of pocket because insurance says I am not fat enough or sick enough. URGH!!! So I am going to "invest" in myself. I am sick of this weight dragging me down. I weigh about 222. Haven't weighed lately so not real sure, but around there. I am only 5'4" so it is a lot for me. A BMI of about 38. I am so nervouse if this thing will work for me. I hear such good news from so many people, but will it work for me?????? Did any of you feel that way????? Another question I have is how do so many people lose so much the first month with no saline in the band? My doctor said no fills for first 3-4 weeks until insides heal. Yet still peole lose. Is that really true? COuld I really lose weight before Christmas after banded 11/22? Please help!

I am 5' tall and was 234. I call myself the weeble wobble. I had no comorbidity, in other words I have no illnesses. I didn't have high BP my cholesterol was only up 2 points and down 2 points for good cholesterol. I had no signs of diabetes but I have Hypothyroidism which causes weight gain and then PCOS which causes weight gain. So with the odds stacked against me and wanting to be proactive I was blessed that the insurance approved me.

As far as the first few weeks, they are tough, liquid diet to mushy to solids. Definately research recipes ahead of time, it will make your life so much easier to have several ideas for mushy foods. I made thick chili with bison meat. 4oz or half a cup was 23g of Protein.

The pain wasn't that bad, as long as you don't lay around. You have to get up and walk and it is uncomfy, but it is much more uncomfortable to have gas trapped in your body.

Once on solids before a fill, you are going to be hungry at times, Water, Water, water, fluids, fluids, fluds.

Stay away from sugar and carbs and you should loose weight fine. I wish you the best of luck.

I had my surgery on November 3rd, so I am 3 weeks post op, and have been able to eat food since Friday the 19th. Yes people really do lose weight, I have lost 14 Lbs since my surgery 3 weeks ago. I think it really depends on what you eat, how much you eat, and if you do some type of excerise. DON'T just sit around! I was up and out of the house walking 3 days after my surgery. Not walking fast, but just walked around the block. I think it made all the differance in my Pain, and how much weight I have lost. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
