Suprised by my first fill...

Recommended Posts

I got banded on October 14. I went into the hospital today to get my first fill (my doctor always does first fills in radiology at hospital). Fill procedure went great, got numbed up, port easily accessed, drank the barium, etc. When I was getting ready to leave I asked the dr. how much he put in my port, he said 7ccs!!! I was really surprised that much was filled. I was expecting maybe 4-5 ccs? Was wondering if anyone else got around 7 their first time and if it worked out well. I'm excited!! :blushing: I am on fluids for first 48 hours, then mushies and hoping on Thanksgiving day to be able to eat teeny bites of my faves.

That sounds like a lot. How big is your band? I have had two fills and only get 1cc each time.

I think the realize band comes in 11 & 14 cc sizes. The lapband standard is 10 cc and I think the lapband large is 14 (not sure on that).

7 cc's is where most people start feeling good appetite suppression with the smaller realize band. Just be really careful since he filled you so fast to stick to the 48 hours of liquids, then progress slowly as tolerated or per doc's instructions.

Keep in mind that sometimes fills will get TIGHTER after they've been in place a while. No one understands why this happens, but it does.

If you start having any pain with eating, call your doctor.

It would worry me to have such a big fill at once, since my very largest has been 1cc, but I also know that we're all different and not everyone needs to be taken up as slowly as I have been.

Good luck and congrats on getting your first fill!! How exciting for you!

Wow!! My cousin's doc is the same way. He does huge first fills.

Just be careful and once you start eating again taking it really slowly!

Thank you Melissannde & Amanda for the advice :-). I am planning on very s l o w l y and carefully resuming solids. Tomorrow my work is celebrating Thanksgiving (early) with a catered Italian lunch and I am just hoping they have Soup, because that is pretty much all I can eat. I have a follow-up visit the week after Christmas, so I am trying to make my goal of 10 pounds lost by then. Thanks for the support and good luck to you two as well!

I also have a realize band and I got 6 cc's in my first fill. I was surprised when she told me she usually did 5 cc's in the first one, but disappointed when she told me I would have to wait for 8 weeks!!!! before the second one. She could tell I was upset so she offered to be more aggressive on the first one and put in 6 cc's. I, too, thought I was going to feel so much restriction and fullness and everything, but........ nothing. Granted, it's been just a week since I had it, and they said it could take up to two weeks to feel anything, but I haven't yet. Everyone's different. Good luck

My first fill was 6 cc's. (I have a 10 cc band.) I was surprised by this large amount, too. Please take it slow and easy. I never threw up before my fill, but find myself doing it every couple of days. And it's true, I felt more restriction a couple of weeks later.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
