Port discomfort very often

Recommended Posts

:ermm

I will Celebrate one year of being banded the 3rd of January. I have always had some port discomfort off and on, but it seems worse these days. I was a bmi of 30 and have lost 33 lbs. There is not much fat around my mid section, it is on my abdomen.

I called Dr. Sancez (my doc) last week and he said that sometimes people that lose a lot of weight will feel their port and so they put it deeper in the muscle. A doc here told me that they don't like to put ports into muscle, deeper because of clots. I don't know what to do.

My port is very prominant and I can even feel the tubing. I think it presses on my diaphram because I get referred shoulder pain time to time. It is a bother, but I don't want to lose my band.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so did you just leave it alone? I have it about half the time now it seems.

Thanks...

I personally have heard this problem many times. Port revisions are somewhat common. However, I can only suggest getting a 2nd opinion and/or an edoscopy if you havn't had one this year. I'm learning that port infections almost always lead to band erosion. I'm not saying you're infected, I just think that any port issue should be taken really seriously.

On a lighter note, I've seen quite a few people get port revisions due to discomfort and come out fine.

I believe you would get a fever, If you can see where your port is and it is sticking out as much as I envision it, I would also get a second opinion. My port reminds me that is it there whenever I bend over to tie my shoes. but usually I forget that it is even there.

I had a port infection for 8 months and never, ever had a fever. My port area was very fevered, red, hot, inflammed, leaking. But my body temperature never changed.

I can also feel my port area all the time. It feels sore all the time. I hope that there isn't an infection present, also, I haven't lost any wt since October, I don't have restriction so I hope with my fill on Jan. 9, I will start to lose the wt. tying to be patient but it's getting difficult.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. ( I forgot how to post new threads, someone send me a reminder). God Bless.

I was low bmi too and banded. I can not feel by tubing. I can feel the port if I press on it but it isn't bulging (unless I eat a lot). I was banded with a BMI of 33 and have a BMI of 25 now. Did they place the port near your breastbone? You said you think it is prssing on your diaphram? Is the tubing near the top of the skin? Seems wierd to me, I would call the doc again and demand some answers.

I too have had a port infection for the past 4 months and have NEVER had a fever. The area is just hard and tender to palpation. Only one day out of the past 4 months has the skin been reddened. You don't necessarily have a fever because the port infection is compartmentalized in the area, not a systemic (body wide) infection. However, it can become that way (which is very dangerous-also known as sepsis) if not treated.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
