Hi all. Im scheduled for surg 11/22/2010. My PCP has had me test my sodium levels 3 times and they always come back low. I have asked my PCP if this raises my risk factor during surg. I have yet to hear back from the office. Has anyone heard/read anything on this? I could not find anything in the other threads. Thanks

MY sodium level was low when they drew the blood in the pre op registration. I was on a liquid diet at that point.

When I went to surgery the anesteshiologist (never could spell that word) said I was too low for surgery. She tested it again when I hadnt had any fluids and it came back ok. She said that they wouldnt have done the surgery because it could have made my brain swell.

Wow. Good thing the anesthesiologist checked. I am going in to have my blood drawn again tonight and I hope it is ok. I do drink plenty of Fluid thru the day but since my PCP told me about the low levels I have restricted it a bit. I dont exceed 48 oz per day. That hasnt really helped. I called to my surg office and the nurse said she would call me back... so in the meantime I am just waiting (and stressing)..... Im sure all will be well but as you know the in between time is a bummer.

Well.....guess I got my answer. My PCP called and told me to cancel the service. Im going in tomorrow morning to see what treatment she is requesting for the low sodium levels. I wanna cry. I have done so much to have this service on 11/22. I know its for the best tho. Darnit.

Never heard of such a thing! A low sodium level would initially sound like a good thing to me but maybe not?

ok so now I am getting a little bit excited again. I went to the Dr this morning and my PCP was not there so I ssaw another Dr. he said that he understands why my Dr was being cautious but he does not see a problem with me having the surg on 11/22! Of course he took more test and said that if the sodium level decreases than I should consider rescheduling. Im confident in my surgeon and I know his team will check me completely prior to me being under anesthesia. This adventure of mine has been an emotional rollcoaster. I just cant wait for the fun part.... Thanks to those that replied. Have a good day all

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
