food poisoning? flu? slip?

Recommended Posts

Questions for anyone who could help.

Thursday I started feeling lousy, nauseous and not hungry. Had Soup only, no problems. Friday I couldn't eat at all, and my stomach felt painful to the touch (like in the old days when I'd get food poisoning). I had one mild incident of vomiting on Friday also. I couldn't get anything down but a little Water. Saturday more of the same, but less of the soreness. Yesterday and today I can eat a bit of cream of wheat, but am uncomfortable drinking much more than a sip at a time.

I'm aware of the band tightening while being sick. My idea is that if I get food poisoning or the flu with the band the symptoms will be different. Anyone know that for sure? I don't live where I can get to a doctor to check for a slip, or I'd have scheduled that.

Really just looking for some reassurance that it's probably a mild flu or something. Any help appreciated!

Sharon

I can't offer you a lot advice. I have only been banded since 10-15.

1. Make sure you don't get dehydrated. I would go to a 100% liquid diet. Try some Isopure fruit punch, gatorade, warm broth.

2. Go to any doctor (Walgreens clinic etc) and get tested for the flu.

3. Call your surgeon's office and let them know. Partner with them, they are your best source for information for you.

4. Relax. Slippage is a very minor occurrence.

Keep us posted. I am thinking of you!!

Hi Sharon,

I am right there with ya. Wasnt able to keep ANYTHING down since Friday- i literally sipped on ice cubes for almost 3 days. Was freaked out i had a slip and don't have a doctor nearby (10 hours away). I just laid low all weekend and today i've a cup of brothy Soup and 1/4 cup of brown rice, and so far so good. I don't recommend this method (of not seeing a doctor) but my gut instinct was it was nerves or an oddity. I did actually find a doctor an hour away that will take my fill out today ($300 emergency fee). i need to have that done anyways, cuz i am having major surgery next week.

good luck to us both!

Thanks for the response Jill. My gut says it's not really a band issue since it was underneath the pouch, but I was hoping for some backup on that! My doctor gave me some of the needles used for filling in case I could find a health care worker in my area and I have an emergency. Hasn't come to that yet, thank goodness

Good luck with your surgery and your unfill. Question: can't they just unfill you at the time of your surgery? Save you some $ and some time? You'd think they would throw something like that in....

Thanks cb9094 for responding. (Didn't see it last post!)

Good advice on the liquids.

Unfortunately, there is no medical care where I live, so that's out. It frequently sucks, living in the middle of nowhere!!

I was sick to from Friday to today. I couldn't keep any thing down at all. Thankfully, I still had my anti-naseau medicine from my surgery. I kept using that and drinking. Today has been the first day that I've actually been able to eat. My stomach felt like somebody had punched me.

I hope everyone is feeling better...

I thought I was doing great yesterday, altho I was still dehydrated. I took my BP and it was 73/52!! I didn't realize being dehydrated knocked it down so far - now I know not to take my BP meds when I can't drink. But, was able to drink and eat a bit so am definitely on the road to recovery.

Hope you all are too! Sharon

hi i had a sickness bug over the weekend the thing is when you are vomiting your stomache will swell plus you get increased blood flow into the stomache lining on the out side this will make your band tighter as is what has happend to mine. realistically you should get a small amount of Fluid taken out but failing that stay with your Protein Drinks and watery fluids. also try and make some thin smoothies up with banana as every time you are sick you loose potassium which can make your system short of it this can have side effects too one of the more serious side effects is the effects it has on your heart if you a deficient. stay on the fluids for at least 4 to 5 days to give your stomach a total rest otherwise it will take longer for the swelling to go down and keep you tight for longer. i have had my band for 12 months now and this is the first time i have had any type of sickness other than the not chewing enough and being stuck you should be aiming to get at least 2 litres of fluid down a day to keep hydrated. but other than that or the unfill that's all you can do until it passes. that and watch the scales drop drastically i dropped 14lb over the weekend which was good for my weight but i a little too fast for my liking but we cant have it all ways can we.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
